The self-assembled chitosan CdSe quantum dots (QDs) and chitosan CdSe-ZnS core-shell QDs films have been prepared by using layer-by-layer electrostatic technique. The well-ordered nanostructure and the layer-by-layer deposition of the QDs are revealed by AFM and exciton absorption spectra, respectively. The optical nonlinearity of the composite films were studied by using Z-scan technique with femtosecond pulses at the wavelength of 790 nm, the value of third-order susceptibility of core-shell QDs are measured to be about 1.1 x 10(-8) esu, which is about 200% larger than that of CdSe QDs of 5.3 x 10(-9) esu. This has potential applications in all-optical switches in optical information processing.

The interplay of electronic charge, spin, and orbital currents, coherently driven by picosecond long oscillations of light fields in spin-orbit coupled systems, is the foundation of emerging terahertz lightwave spintronics and orbitronics. The essential rules for how terahertz fields interact with these systems in a nonlinear way are still not understood. In this work, we demonstrate a universally applicable electronic nonlinearity originating from spin-orbit interactions in conducting materials, wherein the interplay of light-induced spin and orbital textures manifests.

The ligation strategy has been widely used in the chemical synthesis of atomically precise clusters. A series of thymine (T)-ligated Al-T ( = Be, Al, C; = 1-5) complexes have been studied to reveal the effect of DNA nucleobase ligands on the electronic structures of different superatoms in the present work. In addition to its protective role, the successive attachment of thymine ligands significantly lowers the adiabatic ionization energies (AIEs) of the studied Al superatoms with filled and unfilled electronic shells.

Microcavity exciton polaritons (polaritons) as part-light part-matter quasiparticles garner considerable attention for Bose-Einstein condensation at elevated temperatures. Recently, halide perovskites have emerged as promising room-temperature polaritonic platforms because of their large exciton binding energies and superior optical properties. However, currently, inducing room-temperature nonequilibrium polariton condensation in perovskite microcavities requires optical pulsed excitations with high excitation densities.

We reveal a new scenario for the transition of solitons to chaos in a mode-locked fiber laser: the modulated subharmonic route. Its universality is confirmed in two different laser configurations, namely, a figure-of-eight and a ring laser. Numerical simulations of the laser models agree well with the experiments.

Geometries and electronic structures of planar and quasi-planar boron clusters resemble those of aromatic hydrocarbons, providing opportunities for designing novel nonlinear optical materials. However, the nonlinear optical properties, optical-response mechanisms, and optimal optical-response geometries of boron clusters remain unclear. Accordingly, this study addresses these uncertainties.
