Quartz surfaces and colloidal silica particles were derivatized with a poly(methyl methacrylate) copolymer containing spirobenzopyran (SP) photochromic molecules in the pendant groups at a concentration of 20 mol %. Two-photon near-IR excitation (approximately 780 nm) was then used to create chemically distinct patterns on the modified surfaces through a photochromic process of SP transformation to the zwitterionic merocyanine (MC) isomer. The derivatized colloids were approximately 10 times more likely to adsorb onto the photoswitched, MC regions. Surface coverage and adsorption kinetics have been compared to the mean-field model of irreversible monolayer adsorption.

High-throughput measurement of cellular traction forces at the nanoscale remains a significant challenge in mechanobiology, limiting our understanding of how cells interact with their microenvironment. Here, we present a novel technique for fabricating protein nanopatterns in standard multiwell microplate formats (96/384-wells), enabling the high-throughput quantification of cellular forces using DNA tension gauge tethers (TGTs) amplified by CRISPR-Cas12a. Our method employs sparse colloidal lithography to create nanopatterned surfaces with feature sizes ranging from sub 100 to 800 nm on transparent, planar, and fully PEGylated substrates.

The effect of gravity on the collective motion of living microswimmers, such as bacteria and micro-algae, is pivotal to unravel not only bio-convection patterns but also the settling of bacterial biofilms on solid surfaces. In this work, we investigate suspensions of microswimmers under the influence of a gravitational field and hydrodynamics, simulated the dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) coarse-grained model. We first study the collective sedimentation of passive colloids and microswimmers of the puller and pusher types upon increasing the imposed gravitational field and compare them with previous results.

Purpose: Gastrostomy is the commonly used enteral feeding technology. The clinical risks caused by tube dislodgement and peristomal site infection are the common complications before complete tract maturation after gastrostomy. However, there is currently no relevant research to promote gastrostomy wound treatment and tract maturation.

Liposomes are gaining interest in food and pharmaceutical applications due to their biocompatibility and non-toxicity. However, they suffer from low colloidal stability, leakage of encapsulated substances, and poor resistance to intestinal digestive conditions. To address these issues, propolis extract (PE) was encapsulated within a hybrid system combining liposomes and hydrogels.

Migration characteristics and occurrence forms of redox-sensitive metal(loid)s such as arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), and vanadium (V) remained unclear in dynamic estuarine waters. In this work, size fractionation and chemical speciation of As, Cr, and V in the Jiaomen Waterway (JMW), a tidal river of the Pearl River estuary, were explored based on (ultra)filtration, the diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) techniques and a thermodynamic chemical equilibrium model. The results showed that As was present mainly in soluble forms in the river water, and the suspended particulate matter (SPM) was identified the major carrier for Cr.
