Seven pilot-scale partitioning gas tracer tests (PGTTs) were conducted to assess the accuracy and reproducibility of this method for measuring water in municipal solid waste landfills. Tests were conducted in the same location over a 12-month period, and measured moisture conditions ranged from possible dry waste to refuse with a moisture content of 24.7%. The final moisture content of 24.7% was in reasonable agreement with gravimetric measurements of excavated refuse, where the moisture content was 26.5+/-6.0 CI%. Laboratory tests were used to assess the utility of the PGTT for measuring water in small pores, water sorbed to solid surfaces, and the influence of dry waste on PGTTs. These experiments indicated that when refuse surfaces are not completely solvated with water, PGTTs may produce misleading results (negative estimates) of water saturation and moisture content.

Lyophilization remains a key method for preserving sensitive biopharmaceuticals such as monoclonal antibodies. Traditionally, stabilization mechanisms have been explained by vitrification, which minimizes molecular mobility in the lyophilized cake, and water replacement, which restores molecular interactions disrupted by water removal. This study proposes a novel design strategy that combines water activity and glass-transition temperature as the main indicators to predict long-term stability in lyophilized formulations.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of adding aroeira leaf extract (Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi) to a yam starch film matrix, focusing on the development of potentially active films and the evaluation of their physicochemical, mechanical, optical, and antioxidant properties. Films were produced using the casting method with varying extract concentrations (0, 3, 6, 12, and 15 %), yam starch (2 %), and glycerol (1 %). The antioxidant properties were analyzed by determining the total phenolic content, 2,2-Diphenyl-1-Picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, ferric reducing power, and 2,2-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical elimination, which revealed a significant increase in antioxidant properties as the extract concentration increased.

Physical properties were studied in commercial plantation of balsa established in Costa Rica. Among other variables studied, physical properties varied mainly for tree age, spacing, stand density, diameter, and height of trees, which we named dasometric conditions. The aim of this study was (i) to determine the variation of specific gravity (SG), air-dry density (AD), green density (GD), and green moisture content (GMC), (ii) to know the site effect and dasometric conditions on these properties, and (iii) to establish the relationship between the four physical properties.
