Unlabelled: Proximal tibia fractures present a difficult treatment challenge with historically high complication rates. In a prospective study, we asked whether the Less Invasive Stabilization System (LISS) plate can adequately treat extraarticular and complex intraarticular proximal tibia fractures and provide low complication rates and acceptable long-term functional outcomes. We prospectively observed 25 patients with 26 proximal tibia fractures (AO type A2, A3, C1, C2, or C3) treated with the LISS. Consecutive 3-year followup included radiographs and clinical examinations using Knee Society scores and Hospital for Special Surgery scores for extraarticular and intraarticular fractures. No loss of reduction occurred in patients with extraarticular fractures, whereas varus malalignment occurred in one patient with an intraarticular fracture. Two patients with AO 41 C 3.3 fractures had severe knee arthrosis develop and had total knee replacements. The mean Knee Society scores and final average Hospital for Special Surgery scores were similar for extraarticular and intraarticular fractures. Complications related to the surgery included one delayed union and implant removal in two patients. The LISS provided stable fixation of extraarticular and intraarticular proximal tibia fractures and good functional outcomes with a low complication rate. In complex articular fractures additional screws should be used.

Level Of Evidence: Therapeutic study, Level II (lesser quality randomized controlled trial [eg, < 80% followup, no blinding, or improper randomization]).

Introduction: External fixators are utilized to temporarily stabilize bicondylar tibial plateau fractures. They can be prepped during definitive surgery to help maintain fracture length and alignment. However, there is a potential for increased infection by leaving the external fixator on during the surgery.

Background: Long-leg alignment and joint line obliquity have traditionally been assessed using two-dimensional (2D) radiography, but the accuracy of this measurement has remained unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of 2D measurements of lateral distal femoral angle (LDFA) and medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA) using upright three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT).

Methods: This study involved 66 knees from 38 patients (34 women, four men) with knee osteoarthritis (OA), categorized by Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grade.

There is currently no cure or disease-modifying treatment for post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA). This study aims to assess the efficacy of dimethyl fumarate (DMF), a US-FDA approved drug for multiple sclerosis, as a treatment for PTOA. PTOA was induced in male Lewis rats by medial meniscal transection (MMT) surgery, and DMF was intra-articularly administered once, one week following surgery.

Background: Proximal femoral fractures has been associated with high mortality risk, while little is known about more distal lower extremity fractures. The aim was to report 30- and 365-days mortality in surgically treated lower extremity fractures in individuals above 65 years.

Materials And Methods: We extracted data from the Danish National Patient Register on all surgically treated lower extremity fracture in the period 1998-2017.

HIV-related mortality has fallen due to scale-up of antiretroviral therapy (ART), so more women living with HIV (WLH) now live to reach menopause. Menopausal estrogen loss causes bone loss, as do HIV and certain ART regimens. However, quantitative bone data from WLH are few in Africa.
