Feline Hepatozoon species from Brazil was molecular identified and characterized for the first time in São Paulo state, Brazil. Partial sequences of the 18S rRNA gene from the Hepatozoon from three naturally infected cats were analyzed. Sequences revealed that feline Hepatozoon was closely related to the canine Hepatozoon canis from Brazil.

Hepatozoon sp. stages were detected in histological sections of the muscles of 11 of 25 bobcats (Lynx rufus). Parasites were detected from the myocardium of 11, tongues of 4, and limb muscles of 5 of these animals, which had been hunted in Mississippi in 2017.

Hepatozoonosis, caused by the protozoan Hepatozoon canis, is a prevalent blood disease affecting owned and stray dogs and cats. The prevalence of these parasites among companion animals in Thailand remains poorly understood. Diagnosing the old-world form of the disease is challenging due to the wide range of nonspecific clinical signs and the reliance on finding low levels of Hepatozoon gamonts in blood smears for conventional diagnosis.
