The structure of the core oligosaccharide of the lipopolysaccharide from an organic solvent tolerant Gram-negative bacterium, Acinetobacter radioresistens S13, was investigated by chemical analysis, NMR spectroscopy and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. All the experiments were performed on the oligosaccharides obtained either by alkaline degradation or mild acid hydrolysis. The data showed the presence of two novel oligosaccharide molecules containing a trisaccharide of 3-deoxy-D-manno-octulopyranosonic acid in the inner core region and a glucose rich outer core whose structure is the following: [structure: see text] R=H in the main oligosaccharide and beta-Glc in the minor product. The bacterium was grown on aromatic (phenol and benzoic acid) and nonaromatic carbon sources and the core oligosaccharide resulted to occur always with this novel structure.

Spills of petroleum or its derivatives in the environment lead to an enrichment of microorganisms able to degrade such compounds. The interactions taking place in such microbial communities are complex and poorly understood, since they depend on multiple factors, including diversity and metabolic potential of the microorganisms and a broad range of fluctuating environmental conditions. In our previous study, a complete characterization, based on high-throughput sequencing, was performed in a jet-fuel plume using soil samples and in in-situ microcosms amended with hydrocarbons and exposed for 120 days.

An attractive application of hydrogenases, combined with the availability of cheap and renewable hydrogen (i.e., from solar and wind powered electrolysis or from recycled wastes), is the production of high-value electron-rich intermediates such as reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotides.

Acinetobacter spp. are often isolated from natural sources, but knowledge about their presence in wild animals is fragmented and uncomplete. The present study aimed to characterize a series of Acinetobacter radioresistens isolated from Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti).

Although macrophage depletion is a possible emerging therapeutic strategy for osteoporosis and melanoma, the lack of macrophage functions can lead to inappropriate microbial control, especially the regulation of intestinal microbiota. Cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) sepsis was performed in regular mice and in mice with clodronate-induced macrophage depletion. Macrophage depletion significantly increased the mortality and severity of sepsis-CLP mice, partly through the increased fecal Ascomycota, especially , with polymicrobialbacteremia (, , and ).
