Though carbon is mostly tetravalent and tetracoordinated, there are several examples where the coordination number exceeds four. Structural varieties that exhibit hypercarbons in polyhedral structures such as polyhedral carboranes, sandwich complexes, encapsulated polyhedral structures and novel planar aromatic systems with atoms embedded in the middle are reviewed here. The structural variety anticipated with hypercoordinate carbon among carboranes is large as there are many modes of condensation that could lead to large number of new patterns. The relative stabilities of positional isomers of polyhedral carboranes, sandwich structures, and endohedral carboranes are briefly described. The mno rule accounts for the variety of structural patterns. Wheel-shaped and planar hypercoordinated molecules are recent theoretical developments in this area.

Recent advances in low-emittance synchrotron X-ray technology and highly sensitive photon-counting detectors have revolutionized protein micro-crystallography in structural biology. These developments and improvements to sample-exchange robots and beamline control have paved the way for automated and efficient unattended data collection. This study analyzed protein crystal structures such as type 2 angiotensin II receptor, CNNM/CorC membrane proteins and polyhedral protein crystals using small-wedge synchrotron crystallography (SWSX), which dramatically improves measurement efficiency through automated measurement.

Silicon is by far the most important semiconducting material. However, solution-based synthetic approaches for unsaturated silicon-rich molecules require less efficient multi-step syntheses. We report on a straightforward access to soluble, polyhedral Si clusters from the binary phase KSi, which contains both [Si] and [Si] clusters.

Cross-β structures are crucial in driving protein folding and aggregation. However, due to their strong aggregating tendency, the precise control of the self-assembly of β-sheet-forming peptides remains a challenge. We propose a molecular geometry strategy to study and control the self-assembly of cross-β structures.

The "green" copper halides with one-dimensional polyhedron chains are very interesting novel semiconductors. These weakly interacting parallel quantum wires (1D polyhedron chains) play key roles in their photophysical properties. Unlike Cs3Cu2I5, which has been much investigated, its homologous compounds Cs3Cu2Cl5 and CsCu2Cl3 remain less studied and their properties are controversial.

Carboxysomes are anabolic bacterial microcompartments that play an essential role in CO2 fixation in cyanobacteria. This self-assembling proteinaceous organelle uses a polyhedral shell constructed by hundreds of shell protein paralogs to encapsulate the key CO2-fixing enzymes Rubisco and carbonic anhydrase. Deciphering the precise arrangement and structural organization of Rubisco enzymes within carboxysomes is crucial for understanding carboxysome formation and overall functionality.
