Recent advances in thyroid research: selective thyroid hormone receptor modulators (STRMs).

Pediatr Endocrinol Rev

Faculty of Medicine, Technion, Haifa, Israel.

Published: December 2003

Compounds have been designed and tested exhibiting some of the beneficial effects of thyroid hormones, such as lowering of cholesterol and weight reduction, without the adverse thyroid hormone action on heart rate. Progress has also been made in attempting to treat hyperthyroidism by synthesizing antagonists that block thyroid hormone action, at the level of the thyroid hormone receptor or of the thyrotropin receptor. Clinical trials are still awaited, however, to verify whether these potentially promising agents will indeed prove to be of clinical therapeutic value.

Thyroid-Targeted Nano-Bombs Empower HIFU for Graves' Disease.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

January 2025

The Department of Head and Neck Surgery, Cancer Hospital of Shantou University Medical College, Shantou, Guangdong, 515041, P. R. China.

Graves' disease (GD) is an autoimmune disorder with a high incidence rate, particularly affecting women of reproductive age. Current treatment modalities for GD carry significant disadvantages, especially for pregnant or nursing women. As a novel extracorporeal therapeutic technique, high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) shows great promise for treating GD; however, its low treatment efficacy impedes clinical application.

Aim: This study intended to explore associations of reverse triiodothyronine (rT3) with emotional disturbances and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) after experiencing acute ischemic stroke (AIS).

Materials And Methods: Serum samples from individuals with AIS were collected on admission to three Lithuania stroke centers and investigated for free tetraiodothyronine, free triiodothyronine (fT3), rT3, and thyroid stimulating hormone levels. At discharge, emotional disturbance was evaluated using the Hospital Depression and Anxiety Scale (HADS), and HRQoL using the EQ-5D-5L scale.

Most cases of Myxedema Coma are associated with primary hypothyroidism characterized by significantly elevated thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels. However, this case presents an atypical manifestation of myxedema coma with low TSH levels despite severe hypothyroidism. The rarity of this presentation lies in the absence of central lesions typically responsible for such TSH suppression.
