Polymorphs of p-nitrophenol as studied by variable-temperature X-ray diffraction and calorimetry: comparison with m-nitrophenol.

Acta Crystallogr B

Published: February 2006

Crystal structures of two polymorphic forms of p-nitrophenol have been determined at several temperatures between 120 and 375 K. The thermal expansion tensor has been determined for both polymorphs. The rigid-body mean-square amplitudes of molecular translations and librations and the amplitudes of the internal torsions of the nitro group have been calculated at different temperatures. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to find the temperature and enthalpy of the polymorphic transformation. The results were compared with those recently obtained for m-nitrophenol polymorphs. Some conclusions concerning the polymorphism of p- and m-nitrophenols are presented.

Environmental pollutants may cause adverse effects on the immune system of aquatic organisms. However, the cellular effects of pollutants on fish immune system are largely unknown. Here, we exploited the transgenic zebrafish Tg(lysC:DsRed2) larva as a preliminary screening system to evaluate the potential inflammatory effects of environmental pollutants.

Novel crystalline phase and first-order phase transitions of human insulin complexed with two distinct phenol derivatives.

Acta Crystallogr D Biol Crystallogr

April 2015

Section of Genetics, Cell Biology and Development, Department of Biology, University of Patras, GR-26500 Patras, Greece.

The primary focus of the present work is the study of the effects that two ligands and the crystallization pH have on the crystalline forms of human insulin. For this purpose, human insulin (HI) was co-crystallized with two distinct phenolic derivatives: the organic ligands meta-cresol (m-cresol) and 4-nitrophenol. The formation of polycrystalline precipitates was then followed by means of structural characterization of the individual specimens in terms of unit-cell symmetry and parameters.

Different fibrates (bezafibrate, ciprofibrate, clofibrate, fenofibrate, gemfibrozil) were investigated in comparison with their newly synthesized glycinate and glycinate-methylester derivatives. Interactions with the cytochrome P450 (CYP) system were studied by assessing binding to CYP and effects on CYP mediated monooxygenase functions in rat liver 9000 g supernatants, as measured by six model reactions for different CYP isoforms (ethoxyresorufin O-deethylation, ethoxycoumarin O-deethylation, pentoxyresorufin O-depentylation, p-nitrophenol-hydroxylation, ethylmorphine N-demethylation, lauric acid 11- or 12-hydroxylation). Possible prooxidant or antioxidant properties were investigated by the stimulated lipid peroxidation, hydrogen peroxide production, and lucigenin and luminol amplified chemiluminescence using rat liver microsomes.

Peroxynitrite, the reaction product of nitric oxide (NO.) and superoxide anion (O2.-) produced during immune activation by a variety of inflammatory cells, may contribute to genotoxicity of benzene through its ability to carry out hydroxylation and nitration.
