Sera with IgE antibodies against grass pollen often contain IgE against vegetable foods. We investigated the role of the ubiquitous protein profilin in this cross-reactivity. Profilin was purified from Lolium perenne grass pollen by means of affinity purification with Sepharose-coupled poly(L-proline). This solid phase was also used as capturing agent for profilin from pollen and food extracts for application in a radioallergosorbent test. It was shown that profilin is an allergen in grass pollen and in a wide range of vegetable foods, like potato and celery. Within a grass-pollen-sensitive population, patients with IgE to vegetable foods have a high incidence of antibodies against profilin. IgE antibodies against grass pollen profilin were shown to be cross-reactive with respect to vegetable foods.

Chinese cabbage is an important vegetable in southern China. Excessive nitrogen fertilizer application can lead to the accumulation of nitrate in edible organs, which affects food value. Hence, the cultivation of varieties with high nitrogen utilization efficiency (NUE) and low nitrate accumulation is essential for molecular breeding.

Natural polyphenolic antioxidants are widely present in foods such as fruits and vegetables, meanwhile applied in food processing and storage to prevent the formation of harmful compounds. While excessive antioxidants lead to negative impacts on human health. Hence, it is crucial to accurately detect antioxidant levels in order to enhance the overall nutritional content and food safety.

To sensitively monitor trace-level of malathion (MAT) in vegetable samples, an ultrasensitive solid-state electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor was proposed based on TiO@CdSe and Ru(bpy)@Ag NPs. In this system, the introduction of Ag NPs enhanced the initial ECL signal of Ru(bpy)- tripropylamine (TPrA). When TiO@CdSe was introduced into the system, the ECL signal was further enhanced, which may be due to the synergistic effect of the two complexes.

Developing a highly efficient electrocatalyst for detecting hazardous bisphenol S (BPS) is essential to minimize health risks. Herein, we fabricate γ-FeO nanocubes (IONCs) anchored on carbon nanotube nanoribbons (CNRs) (denoted as IONCs-CNRs) for the electrochemical detection of BPS in vegetables. Importantly, the IONCs can be selectively formed only on CNRs via amperometric deposition, while γ-FeO cubic clusters (IOCCs) form in the absence of CNRs.

Young adulthood is an influential life stage for developing lifelong eating patterns, yet limited research characterizes dietary intake among young adults. This cross-sectional study assessed dietary intake and characteristics associated with nutrition knowledge and healthy food consumption among college students. We hypothesized that healthy food intake would be lower than United States (U.
