Alkyl groups of n-octadecyltrimethoxysilane (ODS) in a self-assembled monolayer on a silicon substrate were oxidized to carboxyl groups by partial irradiation of vacuum ultra-violet light under the photomask, producing a COOH/ODS line pattern. After active esterification of carboxyl groups, two kinds of amine-terminated dendrimers, poly(propyleneimine) and poly(amido amine) (PAMAM) dendrimers, were immobilized on a COOH line through amide-bond so that photolithographic dendrimer/ODS pattern was finally fabricated. Preparation was certified by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy at transmission mode. Adsorption of linear macromolecules was examined on PAMAM dendrimer/ODS pattern. After adsorption of poly-L-glutamic acid (PGA) at a pH below alpha-helix--random coil transition, rod-shape texture was observed only on the dendrimer line in an AFM image. This texture is an aggregate of alpha-helical PGA. Sodium hyaluronate and DNA were also adsorbed selectively on the dendrimer line, keeping the line profile, although characteristic textures were not observed.

Herein, pine needles derived spherical nanocellulose (SNC) was combined with aniline to form SNC-polyaniline (SNC-PANI), followed by modification with montmorillonite (MMT) to form SNC-PANI-MMT composite. The as-synthesized materials were characterized by FTIR, XRD, XPS, TGA, FESEM, and EDS and evaluated for the simultaneous adsorption of cationic and anionic dyes, malachite green (MG), and Congo red (CR) from MG-CR mixture, and fuchsin basic (FB) and methyl orange (MO) from FB-MO mixture. Non-linear kinetics of adsorption showed the anionic dyes, CR and MO to follow pseudo-first order kinetics with 91.

The sustainable material, biochar (BC) from a hardwood source, was synthesized via pyrolysis process at 400 °C (BC400) and 700 °C (BC700) and used as a modifier during the electrochemical sensor design. The prepared BCs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, and elemental analysis (CHNS). The development of rapid analytical techniques for detecting pesticides employing a low-cost carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with BC is a novel strategy to provide a sensitive response to water pollution.

Membrane incompatibility poses significant health risks, including severe complications and potential fatality. Surface modification of membranes has emerged as a pivotal technology in the membrane industry, aiming to improve the hemocompatibility and performance of dialysis membranes by mitigating undesired membrane-protein interactions, which can lead to fouling and subsequent protein adsorption. Affinity energy, defined as the strength of interaction between membranes and human serum proteins, plays a crucial role in assessing membrane-protein interactions.

Mercury (II) ion (Hg) as highly toxic heavy metal may be accumulated in aquatic ecosystems and animals species so as to enter human body to conduct health harm. To ensure the safety of fishes food, hence, it is of great interest to evaluate the Hg levels in different kinds of fishes as well as Hg removal in aquaculture tailwater. In this article, a selective colormetric detection and efficient removal strategy has been developed for Hg ions by the controlled supermolecular self-assembly of melamine (MA)-platinum (Pt) composites onto mesoporous FeO carriers.

Significant progress has been made in the last two decades in producing small (<2μm), high-purity, and low-adsorption particles, columns and system hardware, for ultra-high pressure liquid chromatography (UHPLC). Simultaneously, the recent rapid expansion of cell and gene therapies for treating diseases necessitates novel analytical technologies for analyzing large (>2 kbp) plasmid double-stranded (ds) DNA (which encodes for the in vitro transcription (IVT) of single-stranded (ss) mRNA therapeutics) and dsRNAs (related to IVT production impurities) biopolymers. In this context, slalom chromatography (SC), a retention mode co-discovered in 1988, is being revitalized using the most advanced column technologies for improved determination of the critical quality attributes (CQAs) of such new therapeutics.
