The electrocardiogram (ECG) is a powerful tool to measure the electrical activity of the heart, and the analysis of its data can be useful to assess the patient's health. In particular, the computational analysis of electrocardiogram data, also called ECG signal processing, can reveal specific patterns or heart cycle trends which otherwise would be unnoticeable by medical experts. When performing ECG signal processing, however, it is easy to make mistakes and generate inflated, overoptimistic, or misleading results, which can lead to wrong diagnoses or prognoses and, in turn, could even contribute to bad medical decisions, damaging the health of the patient.

Bidirectional ventricular tachycardia is a unique arrhythmia that can herald lethal arrhythmia syndromes. Using cases based on real patient stories, this article examines 3 different presentations to help clinicians learn the differential diagnosis associated with this condition. Each associated genetic disorder will be briefly discussed, and valuable tips for distinguishing them from each other will be provided.

An implantable loop recorder (ILR) is a leadless rectangular device used for prolonged electrocardiographic monitoring for up to 3 years. This miniaturized device, inserted subcutaneously, allows clinicians to investigate possible cardiac rhythm disturbances in patients suffering from recurrent unexplained syncope. As the age of the population increases rapidly and the number of ILR patients amplifies, the clinical significance of ILRs is undeniable.

A prolonged QT interval on the electrocardiogram is associated with an increased risk of the torsades de pointes form of ventricular arrhythmia resulting in syncope, sudden cardiac arrest or death, or misdiagnosis as a seizure disorder. The cause of QT prolongation can be congenital and inherited as an autosomal dominant variant, or it can be transient and acquired, often because of QT-prolonging drugs or electrolyte abnormalities. Automated measurement of the QT interval can be inaccurate, especially when the baseline electrocardiogram is abnormal, and manual verification is recommended.
