The unprecedented spread of the highly pathogenic avian influenza type A H5N1 is a threat to veterinary public health. However, the virus does not in its present form constitute a major threat to human public health. Only if the virus mutates to spread effectively from person to person will there be a risk of a new pandemic. It is not possible to predict if this will happen, when it may happen or how serious it may be. At present, seasonal influenza represents the greatest burden of illness among the three types of influenza A illness: seasonal, avian, and pandemic influenza.

The equivalent value (EV)-based workload assessment of primary healthcare workers in Beijing, China.

Hum Resour Health

January 2025

Health Development Research Department, Capital Institute of Pediatrics, Beijing, 100020, People's Republic of China.

Background: Quantitative methods for estimating the workload of primary healthcare (PHC) workers are essential for improving the performance of PHC institutions. However, measuring the workload of PHC workers is challenging due to the diverse and complex range of services covered by PHC. This study aims to use an equivalent value (EV)-based approach to assess the workload of PHC workers and inform policymakers about the current workload burden in Beijing, China.

As researchers increasingly utilize systems science simulation modeling (SSSM), little is known about how and by whom SSSMs are being leveraged to address inequities in access to healthy diets. We evaluated the extent to which studies (n = 66) employing SSSM to examine retail food environments (RFEs): included three pillars of equity (social position, human capital, socioeconomic and political context) that shape RFEs and access to healthy diets; grounded model design and development in theory; engaged with diverse stakeholders and lived experiences related to RFEs; and translated model findings towards addressing inequities in RFEs. Most studies (n = 58) included some model characteristics related to social position (e.

Trends in the epidemiology of intravascular device-associated bacteremia among French hematology patients: insights from the SPIADI prospective multicenter study, 2020-2024.

Ann Hematol

January 2025

Mission Nationale Surveillance et Prévention des Infections Associées aux Dispositifs Invasifs (SPIADI), Centre d'Appui pour la Prévention des Infections Associées aux Soins en région Centre val de Loire, Centre Hospitalier Régional Universitaire, Hôpital Bretonneau, Tours, France.

Hematology patients require central venous catheters for cancer treatment and nutrition, which increases their risk of intravascular device-associated bacteremia. In the absence of recent data, we investigated intravascular device-associated bacteremia in this specific context. A three-month surveillance was conducted annually in 27 hematology wards, using a protocol derived from the HAI-Net ICU ECDC protocol (2020-2024).

Pathological variants in HPV-independent vulvar tumours.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Laboratory Medicine, Clinical Pathology and Genetics, Faculty of Medicine and Health, Örebro University, Örebro, Sweden.

Vulvar cancer is a rare gynaecological disease that can be caused by infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). The mutational frequencies and landscape for HPV-associated and HPV-independent vulvar tumor development are supposedly two distinctly different pathways and more detailed knowledge on target biological mechanisms for individualized future treatments is needed. The study included formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) samples from 32 cancer patients (16 HPV-negative and 16 HPV-associated), treated in Örebro, Sweden from 1988 to 2008.
