Background: High-risk human papilloma viruses (HPV) are reported to be significant independent risk factors for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The prevalence of HPV in OSCC in a South African population sample was evaluated comparing three different HPV detection methods.
Methods: Tumour and adjacent morphologically normal oral mucosa of 59 resections of primary OSCC were evaluated for the presence of HPV using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), conventional in situ hybridization (ISH), and a signal amplification ISH technique (Dako GenPoint).
Results: HPV18 DNA was detected in seven cases using real-time PCR. No positivity was found with the other two ISH techniques.
Conclusions: We support the view that HPV is probably unimportant in the pathogenesis of OSCC and hypothesize HPV detection techniques as the main reason for the positive results in many studies. Real-time PCR was confirmed as the most sensitive technique, but researchers are urged to incorporate strict internal controls when using this detection method.

Background: Cervical cancer disparities persist among minoritized women due to infrequent screening and poor follow-up. Structural and psychosocial barriers to following up with colposcopy are problematic for minoritized women. Evidence-based interventions using patient navigation and tailored telephone counseling, including the Tailored Communication for Cervical Cancer Risk (TC3), have modestly improved colposcopy attendance.

The usual procedures for screening and diagnosing cervical cancer include Pap smears and HPV tests, even though they have considerable drawbacks, particularly for older women (> 60 years) who have limited access to or compliance with these tests. Urinalysis is a simple, noninvasive test that has been suggested as an alternative procedure.

The present study investigated the involvement of human papillomavirus (HPV)16 and HPV18 in oropharyngeal malignancies in order to understand the oncogenic mechanisms, and to identify biomarkers for early detection and treatment targets. Given the rising incidence of HPV-associated cancer, particularly in India, this holds significance in elucidating the molecular basis of these diseases. Structural validation of HPV16 and 18 oncoproteins E6 and E7 was conducted using computational tools, while gene expression profiles related to oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) were analyzed to assess differential expression.

Cervical cancer continues to disproportionately burden women in sub-Saharan Africa, and is the commonest gynecological cancer in Ghana. The Cervical Cancer Prevention and Training Centre (CCPTC), Battor, Ghana spearheaded the Ghana arm of the mPharma 10,000 Women Initiative (mTTWI) between September 2021 and October 2022. The aim of this study was to examine the outcomes of nationwide concurrent screening using high-risk human papillomavirus (hr-HPV) DNA testing and visual inspection methods, as well as factors associated with the screening outcomes.

Introduction: The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommendation for cervical cancer screening includes the option to screen with high-risk human papilloma virus (hrHPV) alone, but some studies have reported that hrHPV testing alone missed precancerous and cancerous lesions. In this study, we evaluated the test performance characteristics of hrHPV in detecting cervical dysplasia with cervical cytology and biopsy as comparators.
Materials And Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of Papanicolaou smears between January and December 2019 performed at our institution with concurrent hrHPV and cytology testing.
