Purpose: This study aims to establish an electronic wheelchair system in Taiwan that conforms to multiple master-multiple slave (M3S) standards. The proposed system could enhance the safety and convenience of people with disabilities.

Material And Method: The M3S-based head-controlled electric wheelchair consists of three parts: (A) the input device, (B) the output device, and (C) the safety device. Head movement can be used as the input control to cause the tilting device to produce a corresponding level of analog voltage (backward & forward/left & right) which is then transmitted to the analogy/digital conversion module to control the output device (wheelchair's motor). Ten subjects with C5 incompleted spinal cord injury were recruited in the clinical assessment. They were randomly assigned into groups A and B. In the group A, the subjects were assigned to operate the head-controlled wheelchair system with M3S standard before operating the head-controlled wheelchair system without M3S standard. In the group B, the subjects were assigned to operate the head-controlled wheelchair system without M3S standard before operating the head-controlled wheelchair system with M3S standard. Two subjects in the group B drop off due to their personal reasons.

Results: The time cost for group A in completing tasks 1, 2, and 3 with the M3S and without the M3S were insignificant (p>0.05). The time cost for completing in group B was insignificant (p>0.05). Thus, the wheelchair operating time is depended on the proficiency of the subjects, not the M3S standard added.

Discussions And Conclusions: The time cost for subjects to operate the wheelchair was determined by their proficiency, not the M3S standard control added to the system. However, the M3S-based system did realize the safety mechanism and complex auxiliary tools with and without the plug-in and play function.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates trends and variability of hydroclimate variables in the Didessa sub-basin, utilizing methods like Modified Mann-Kendall and Sen's slope estimators.
  • Most areas showed an increasing trend in seasonal and annual rainfall, but winter rainfall decreased, while the overall mean temperature rose significantly by +0.02 °C annually.
  • Streamflow analysis revealed mixed trends for upstream stations but a positive correlation with mean rainfall, highlighting important implications for water resource management and climate change strategies.

Due to a rapidly aging global population, osteoporosis and the associated risk of bone fractures have become a wide-spread public health problem. However, osteoporosis is very heterogeneous, and the existing standard diagnostic measure is not sufficient to accurately identify all patients at risk of osteoporotic fractures and to guide therapy. Here, we constructed the first prospective multi-omics atlas of the largest osteoporosis cohort to date (longitudinal data from 366 participants at three time points), and also implemented an explainable data-intensive analysis framework (DLSF: Deep Latent Space Fusion) for an omnigenic model based on a multi-modal approach that can capture the multi-modal molecular signatures (M3S) as explicit functional representations of hidden genotypes.

Background: Postoperative pain and swelling associated with the removal of the third molar (M3) adversely affect the patient's quality of life.

Purpose: The study aims to measure pain reduction and analgesic use in patients treated with pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy following M3 removal and compares it to patients who did not receive PEMF.

Study Design, Setting, Sample: The single-center study was designed as a randomized, prospective, controlled, double-blinded trial on a sample of patients with impacted mandibular M3 ascertained by x-ray orthopantomography and computed tomography.

Estuarine environmental flow assessment based on the flow-ecological health index relation model: a case study in Yangtze River Estuary, China.

Environ Monit Assess

March 2024

Key Laboratory of Yangtze River Water Environment of the Ministry of Education, College of Environmental Science and Engineering, Tongji University, Shanghai, 200092, China.

Environmental flow (e-flow) is the water demand of one given ecosystem, which can become the flow regulation target for protection and restoration of river or estuarine ecosystems. In this study, an e-flow assessment based on the flow-ecological health index (EHI) relation model was conducted to improve ecosystem health of the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE). Monitoring data of hydrology, biology, and water environment in the last decades were used for the model establishment.

Aeration plays a crucial role in aquaculture to maintain adequate dissolved oxygen (DO) levels in water, which is essential for supporting aquatic life. However, traditional aeration systems such as paddlewheel aerators or diffused air aerators often come with high energy consumption, frequent maintenance, and greater operational costs. To address these challenges, this research paper presents the development and evaluation of a more sustainable and cost-effective aerator, named the perforated pooled circular stepped cascade aerator (PPCSC), for intensive aquaculture.
