While debate continues as to whether genetic sequences, which many argue represent natural phenomena rather than inventions, should be subject to standard patent protections, issuance of patents that claim DNA sequences remains common practice. In an attempt to insulate researchers from patent claims that could hinder scientific progress, many countries have provided general exemptions for scientific research. However, there is no international consensus about the extent of required protections, and even existing exemptions vary widely in clarity and are limited in practical application. We believe that gene patents raise several unique issues that are inadequately handled by the current research exemptions.

ISLE: An Intelligent Streaming Framework for High-Throughput AI Inference in Medical Imaging.

J Imaging Inform Med

December 2024

Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, University of Maryland Medical Intelligent Imaging (UM2ii) Center, University of Maryland School of Medicine, 100 N Greene St, Baltimore, MD, 21201, USA.

As the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) systems in radiology grows, the increase in demand for greater bandwidth and computational resources can lead to greater infrastructural costs for healthcare providers and AI vendors. To that end, we developed ISLE, an intelligent streaming framework to address inefficiencies in current imaging infrastructures. Our framework draws inspiration from video-on-demand platforms to intelligently stream medical images to AI vendors at an optimal resolution for inference from a single high-resolution copy using progressive encoding.

Green building development is a global strategic plan aimed at addressing environmental burdens and reducing energy consumption in the building sector. Currently, research does not adequately reveal the spatiotemporal patterns of green-certified building development and the factors that influence it. To address this gap, this study investigates the dynamic distribution of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified projects in the U.

A neural network (NN) computational spectrometer has high reconstruction accuracy and a fast operation speed; however, this type of spectrometer also occupies a large amount of storage in an embedded system due to the excessive computation volume. Contrarily, conventional algorithms such as gradient projection for sparse reconstruction (GPSR) take up less storage, but their spectral reconstruction accuracy is much lower than that of an NN. The major reason is that the performance of a GPSR depends greatly on the non-correlation property of optical filters which may pose challenges for optical filters design and fabrication.

Background: Understanding the long-term behavior of intracortically-recorded signals is essential for improving the performance of Brain Computer Interfaces. However, few studies have systematically investigated chronic neural recordings from an implanted microelectrode array in the human brain.

Methods: In this study, we show the applicability of wavelet decomposition method to extract and demonstrate the utility of long-term stable features in neural signals obtained from a microelectrode array implanted in the motor cortex of a human with tetraplegia.

Background: Genome-wide association studies conducted on QRS duration, an electrocardiographic measurement associated with heart failure and sudden cardiac death, have led to novel biological insights into cardiac function. However, the variants identified fall predominantly in non-coding regions and their underlying mechanisms remain unclear.

Results: Here, we identify putative functional coding variation associated with changes in the QRS interval duration by combining Illumina HumanExome BeadChip genotype data from 77,898 participants of European ancestry and 7695 of African descent in our discovery cohort, followed by replication in 111,874 individuals of European ancestry from the UK Biobank and deCODE cohorts.
