Branching in semiconductor nanocrystals, which leads to tetrapods and to more complex architectures, is the subject of intensive investigation. Here we support the model according to which branching in CdTe nanocrystals is driven by the formation of multiple wurtzite twins. This is in contrast to previous models for this material. We found that twinning, as well as anisotropic growth, can be triggered by the presence of suitable molecules, such as for instance methylphosphonic acid. In the case of CdTe nanocrystals, we designed a robust growth scheme in which the variation of a single parameter (the concentration of methylphosphonic acid in solution) leads to the controlled formation of nanocrystals with shapes ranging from spheres to anisotropic structures with varying level of branching, as both twinning and anisotropic growth are progressively favored. We believe that these concepts can be extended to other nanocrystal systems.

A dual-signal aptamer-based assay utilizing colorimetric and fluorescence techniques was developed for the determination of zearalenone (ZEN). The CdTe quantum dots, serving as the fluorescent signal source, were surface-modified onto FeO@SiO and subsequently functionalized with the aptamer. The COF-Au was modified with complementary chain, which possessed peroxide (POD)-like enzyme properties, and could catalyze the peroxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to ox TMB, resulting in the generation of colorimetric signals.

Accurately monitoring the freshness of high-protein foods has significant implications for both food safety and public welfare. Since a large amount of hydrogen sulfide (HS) is produced during spoilage-related processes, abnormal HS levels are often considered an important indicator of food spoilage. Therefore, we synthesized novel nanoparticles (NPs) containing Silicon (Si) dots and CdTe quantum dots to accurately assess the amount of sulfide ions (S) and thus the quality of high-protein foods in the early stage of storage.

The flexible surface and chemical compatibility of hydrogels render them particularly appealing for research and development in antibacterial materials. However, designing tough hydrogels with multiple antibacterial mechanisms simultaneously remains a challenge. Inspired by the human skin, a hydrogel with bacterial antifouling, detection, and inactivation functions has been prepared using zwitterionic [2-(methylacrylyl) ethyl] dimethyl-(3-propyl sulfonate) ammonium hydroxide (SBMA) as the matrix and cadmium telluride quantum dots functionalised with cysteamine (CA-CdTe QDs) as the filler through micelle copolymerisation technology, achieving the integration of multiple antimicrobial mechanisms.

Superoxide anion (O) is a highly reactive oxygen species (ROS) within tumor cells, and its abnormal concentrations can lead to various diseases such as cancer, inflammation, and premature aging disorders. Here, we obtained a series of bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) systems that can be used for sensitive and specific detection of O by varying the type and reaction time of quantum dots (QDs) and combining them with different concentrations of recombinant aequorin. Among them, the recombinant aequorin-conjugated CdTe/CdSe QDs had the highest conjugation efficiency as the Aeq-QD BRET sensor, which has a remarkable energy transfer efficiency of 35.

This paper aimed to investigate the role of surface modification on the potential interaction between CdTe quantum dots (QDs) and ABC transporters in doxorubicin-resistant lung cancer (A549/DOX) cells. For this purpose, CdTe QDs modified with -glutathione (GSH), -carboxy (COOH), and -amino (NH) were applied, with the former two QDs exhibiting negative potentials and the latter ones being positive. All the three QDs reduced cell viability in a concentration-dependent manner, with NH-CdTe QDs being more toxic.
