Cotton-tipped applicators used in surgery of the nose.

Dermatol Surg

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Miami, Florida, USA.

Published: November 2005

Background: A variety of uses have been described for cotton-tipped applicators.

Objective: We describe an additional application in surgeries involving the nose. This technique uses 8-inch obstetrics-gynecology applicators with oversized cotton tips, unlike most articles, which report the use of 6-inch applicators with smaller cotton heads. The applicators function to stabilize and support the nasal structures and thus provide a steadier operating field.

Conclusion: It can be used in procedures of the nose, including curettage, electrocautery, hemostasis, and Mohs and other surgical excisions.

Objective: To compare characteristics and treatment outcomes of spontaneous chronic corneal epithelial defects (SCCEDs) in brachycephalic non-Boxers and Boxers. We hypothesized that brachycephalic non-Boxers develop SCCEDs at a younger age and develop complications more frequently than Boxers.

Animals Studied: Retrospective review of medical records of brachycephalic dogs treated for SCCEDs between January 2018 and December 2022 in multiple ophthalmology referral centers in the UK.

Transient plasma membrane disruption induced calcium waves in mouse and human corneal epithelial cells.

PLoS One

April 2024

Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy, Medical College of Georgia, Augusta University, Augusta, GA, United States of America.

The purpose of this study was to examine transient plasma membrane disruptions (TPMDs) and TPMD-induced Ca++ waves (TPMD Ca++ Wvs) in human and mouse corneal epithelium (HCEC and MCEC). A multi-photon microscope was used to create laser-induced TPMDs in single cultured cells and in intact ex vivo and in vivo MCECs and ex vivo human cornea rim HCECs. Eye rubbing-induced TPMDs were studied by gentle rubbing with a cotton tipped applicator over a closed eyelid in ex vivo and in vivo MCECs.

Transformation zone types: a call for review of the IFCPC terminology to embrace practice in low-resource settings.

Ecancermedicalscience

October 2023

Department of Emergency Medicine, College of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta, 730 University Terrace, Edmonton, AB T6G 2T4, Canada.

Most cervical cancers develop in the transformation zone (TZ). Type 3 TZs, where the full circumference of the squamocolumnar junction (SCJ) is not visible pose problems during cervical screening with visual inspection methods, as (pre)cancerous lesions may be missed. Several practical strategies can be implemented to convert type 3 TZs into TZ 1 or TZ 2, including the use of an endocervical speculum or hygroscopic cervical dilators, opening the vaginal speculum more widely, skillful use of cotton-tipped applicators, performing colposcopy in midcycle, and use of oral or vaginal misoprostol and estrogen to 'ripen' the cervix.

Background And Aims: Sphenopalatine ganglion block (SPGB) given as injection provides excellent perioperative analgesia during palatoplasty. Our objectives were to assess the effect of transmucosal SPGB on anesthetic requirements, intraoperative hemodynamics, recovery time, and emergence delirium in children undergoing palatoplasty.

Material And Methods: This prospective, randomized study was conducted in 30 children with cleft palate undergoing palatoplasty, divided into two equal groups.
