The mechanism of the protonation of solid metal (hydr)oxides in aqueous media, which is closely interrelated to many processes of great technological and environmental importance, has been elucidated using simulation and experimental work. The electrical potential, smeared out at the interfacial region, changes the concentration of the H+ ions on the surface of the (hydr)oxide, thus promoting or hindering protonation. This is manifested by the shifts of the protonation peaks of the various kinds of surface sites and the appearance of an extra peak in the differential potentiometric titration curve.

This work aims at the effects of anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) and ionomer binders on the catalyst electrodes for anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). In the experiments, four metal catalysts (nano-grade Pt, PtRu, PdNi and Ag), four AEMs (aQAPS-S8, AT-1, X37-50T and X37-50RT) and two alkaline ionomers (aQAPS-S14 and XB-7) were used. They were verified through several technical parameters examination and cell performance comparison for the optimal selection of AMEs.

Novel metal oxides partially derived perovskite-structured hydroxides for room temperature trace NO gas sensors under UV irradiation.

Talanta

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Applied Chemistry and Nanotechnology at University of Jilin Province, Changchun University of Science and Technology, Changchun, 130022, China. Electronic address:

Perovskite-structured materials are used as gas-sensitive materials due to their wide bandgap and controllable morphology, but large initial resistance and low response limit their development. In this work, ZnSn(OH)/ZnO composites derived from ZnO were synthesized by hydrothermal method. The gas-sensitive results show that all sensors show significantly improved response to NO under UV irradiation compared with without UV irradiation.

Impacts of acid mine drainage remediation in the largest gold mine of Latin America on natural water bodies in the Dominican Republic.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

December 2024

Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, Facultad de Ciencias, Zona Universitaria, Distrito Nacional, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Impacts of the acid mine drainage (AMD) remediation are investigated on the largest gold mine in Latin America, located in the Dominican Republic. Geochemical analysis of suspended matter in water performed in 2022 on water bodies located downstream to the mine, namely, the Margajita River and Lake Hatillo, are compared with analyses made in 2007, before the AMD remediation. The results for the Margajita River show a strong decrease in heavy metal and metalloid concentrations in the dissolved phase for Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sb, and Pb (between 89.

Tannic acid (TA), as a plant polyphenol, has many active sites for chelation with metals, so TA-oligomers (TA-Olig) were used for the first time as ligands on the surface of Ce-Mn-LDH to prepare the layered double hydroxide-based metal-organic framework (Ce-Mn-LDH@CPTMS@TA-Olig@Co-MOF = E) nanocomposite. In this regard, a homogeneous water/ethanol solution was prepared by sol-gel method using polyethylene glycol and ammonia solution, and then TA was converted into a set of oligomers in the presence of formaldehyde. In the next step, Ce-Mn-LDH was prepared in a ratio of 1 : 4 of Ce to Mn, modified with 3-chloropropylmethoxysilane, functionalized by TA-Olig, and then cobalt salt was used to prepare E.
