Background: The purpose of this study was to reveal the role of septoplasty in curing chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) in patients with significant septal deviation.

Methods: This prospective study involved 26 patients with CRS and septal deviation. The patients were randomly divided into two groups according to the applied surgical procedures. In the first and second groups, septoplasty and septoplasty plus endoscopic sinus surgery were applied, respectively. Subjective (questionnaire) and objective (endoscopy and computerized tomography) success rates were used to analyze the results.

Results: Septoplasty alone and septoplasty plus endoscopic sinus surgery were applied in 57.7% (15/26) and 42.3% (11/ 26) of the patients, respectively. Success rates were 93.3% (14/15) and 81.8% (9/11), subjectively (p > 0.05), and 66.7% (10/15) and 54.5% (6/11), objectively (p > 0.05), respectively in each group.

Conclusion: We suggest that septoplasty alone can be adequate for the treatment of CRS with septal deviation.

An Algorithmic Approach to use Extended Spreader Grafts in Deviated Noses.

Aesthetic Plast Surg

November 2024

Department of Plastic surgery, King Edward Medical University, Mayo Hospital, Lahore, Pakistan.

Background: Restoration of a straight and adequately wide nasal dorsum is challenging in patients with deviated noses. Supporting a reformed septum with an extended spreader graft (ESG) is important for maintaining position.

Objective: The study aimed to describe different types of ESG and propose a comprehensive algorithm for using specific types of ESGs in rhinoplasty according to the particular type of deviated nose.

Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSA) is a multi-factorial disorder, with quite complex endotypes, consisting of anatomical and non-anatomical pathophysiological factors. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is recognized as the first-line standard treatment for OSA, whereas upper airway (UA) surgery is often recommended for treating mild OSA patients who have refused or cannot tolerate CPAP, mild and primary snorers. The main results achievable by the surgery are UA expansion, and/or stabilization, and/or removal of the obstructive tissue to different UA levels.

Unlabelled: In otorhinolaryngology, the question of improving the tactics of early postoperative management in patients who have undergone surgery on the structures of the nasal cavity remains open. The timing of rehabilitation, the possible outcome of postoperative inflammation of the mucous membrane and the patient's ability to work depend on the choice of tactics. The nasal cavity differs from other anatomical areas in its rich blood supply, and therefore the problem of adequate hemostasis in the early stages after undergoing surgical treatment is still extremely relevant.

Wedge resection combined with 3D-printed polycaprolactone mesh for caudal septal deviation.

J Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg

October 2023

Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Guro Hospital, Korea University College of Medicine, 08308, Seoul, South Korea.

Background: Biocompatibility and stability of three-dimensional printed polycaprolactone mesh grafts for nasal surgery are proven in both animal and human models. However, their safety and durability as batten grafts for caudal septal deviation has not been documented. This study was designed to investigate the efficacy and safety of three-dimensional printed polycaprolactone mesh batten graft in septoplasty using the wedge resection technique for the correction of caudal septal deviation.

Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Antalya Finike State Hospital, Finike, Antalya, Turkey.

We reviewed the potential benefits of conchal cartilage or Polydioxanone (PDS) foil-empowered nasal cartilage as caudal septal extension grafts (CSEGs). Research methods included searching online databases such as Google, Google Scholar, PubMed, and Proquest Central at Kırıkkale University. Use terms like "caudal septal extension grafts," "septal extension grafts," "conchal cartilage," and "PDS foil-empowered nasal cartilage" to find related articles.
