Diabetes mellitus and keratoconjunctivitis sicca were diagnosed in a female Poodle. The dog was treated for diabetes and keratoconjunctivitis sicca until blood glucose concentrations were within normal limits. Treatment for keratoconjunctivitis sicca was suspended then, and signs of this disorder did not appear again. Most of the factors known to predispose to keratoconjunctivitis sicca were not applicable to this dog. On the basis of observations made in this dog, we suggest that diabetes mellitus and keratoconjunctivitis sicca may be linked. Clinical signs of the disorders developed simultaneously and resolved when diabetes mellitus was controlled with insulin.

Methods: At The Ohio State University and MedVet Columbus, ophthalmic examinations were performed on client-owned animals for which a TECALBO or VBO was indicated. Examination findings and postoperative complications relating to ophthalmic and/or neuro-ophthalmic diseases were recorded prior to surgery (T0) and at 1 day (T1), 2 to 3 weeks (T14), and ± 2 months (T60) postoperatively.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a complex, multisystemic disease and is associated with ocular pathology in 4-12% of patients. In general, ocular disease affects Crohn's patients more frequently than those with ulcerative colitis. Episcleritis and uveitis are the most common presentations, with episcleritis often correlating with IBD flares, whereas uveitis presents independently of IBD activity and, in some cases, may even alert clinicians to a new diagnosis of IBD.
