A two-dimensional-corrugated-slab-waveguide add/drop filter providing 100% resonant reflection at 1.55 microm wavelength for both TE and TM polarizations with identical FWHM is designed. The fabricated device exhibits a reflectivity spectrum of more than 95% peak reflection for both polarizations at 1.537 microm. The coupling scheme involves the TE0 guided mode only; it is made relatively tolerant by means of a double-sided crossed grating.

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) originating from quantum physics can lead to a very narrow-band transparent window, which is sensitive to minor environmental changes. The rational construction of highly sensitive EIT metamaterials facilitates its wide sensing application in the terahertz (THz) range. In this work, we designed what we believe to be a novel polarization-independent EIT terahertz metamaterial sensor composed of four symmetrical Chinese Taichi-like rings and a crossed-shaped structure.

Metamaterial absorbers have diverse applications in the terahertz range. In this paper, a metallic metamaterial absorber is designed to work as a narrowband, wideband, or ultrawideband according to application. A systematic method with minimal computational requirements for the design is developed.

High-order bandpass filtering responses are highly desirable for frequency-selective surfaces (FSSs) in narrowband antenna/radar systems. In this paper, the design process of a reconfigurable dual-band FSS with second-order response is presented. Initially, the basic dumbbell-shaped resonator used in this design is theoretically investigated using the characteristic mode analysis (CMA) method to study the relation between geometric design parameters and the excited orthogonal resonance modes in different frequency bands.

Coherent coupling of optical modes with a high Q-factor underpins realization of efficient light-matter interaction with multi-channels in resonant nanostructures. Here we theoretically studied the strong longitudinal coupling of three topological photonic states (TPSs) in a one-dimensional topological photonic crystal heterostructure embedded with a graphene monolayer in the visible frequencies. It is found that the three TPSs can strongly interplay with one another in the longitudinal direction, enabling a large Rabi splitting (∼ 48 meV) in spectral response.

Subwavelength dielectric gratings based on guided mode resonances (GMRs) provide a compact, low-cost, and readily fabricable platform for narrowband spectral filters applied in numerous fields, such as sensors, spectrometers, and hyperspectral imaging. We numerically designed two long-wave infrared transmission bandpass filters based on Ge-ZnS-Ge thin film stacks and 2D zero-contrast gratings. The first filter is attributed to double GMR mode coupling, exhibiting a broadband high reflectance between 8 and 12 µm and a narrow transmission peak with a spectral linewidth of 53 nm and transmittance efficiency of 98% at the resonance.
