We report the structure, spectroscopy, and electrochemistry of cis-[Os(bpy)(2)(DMSO)(2)](OTf)(2), where bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine, DMSO is dimethyl sulfoxide, and OTf is trifluoromethanesulfonate. Electrochemical measurements are consistent with S-to-O isomerization following the oxidation of Os(2+) (1.8 V vs Ag/AgCl). Visible irradiation of the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer transition (355 nm) of [Os(bpy)(2)(DMSO)(2)](2+) in the solid state and solution yields an emissive S-bonded excited state and S-to-O excited-state isomerization on a subnanosecond time scale. These results and a comparison to the nonphotoactive [Os(bpy)(2)Cl(DMSO)](+) are discussed.

Azo dyes that combine electron-withdrawing thiazole/benzothiazole heterocycles and electron-donating amino groups within the very same covalent skeleton exhibit relaxation times for their thermal isomerization kinetics within milli- and microsecond timescales at room temperature. Notably, the thermal back reaction of the corresponding benzothiazolium and thiazolium salts occurred much faster, within the picosecond temporal domain. In fact, these new light-sensitive platforms are the first molecular azo derivatives capable of reversible switching between their trans and cis isomers in a subnanosecond timescale under ambient conditions.

Hindered Isomerization at the Silica/Aqueous Interface: Surface Polarity or Restricted Solvation?

Time-resolved fluorescence measurements performed in a total internal reflection (TIR) geometry examined the photophysical behavior of coumarin 152 (C152) adsorbed to a silica/aqueous interface. Results imply that interfacial C152 has a remarkably different photoisomerization rate compared to its bulk solution value. C152's fluorescence in bulk water is dominated by a short, sub-nanosecond emission lifetime as the solute readily forms a nonemissive, twisted, intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state.

Ultrafast processes in light-absorbing proteins have been implicated in the primary step in the light-to-energy conversion and the initialization of photoresponsive biological functions. Theory and computations have played an instrumental role in understanding the molecular mechanism of such processes, as they provide a molecular-level insight of structural and electronic changes at ultrafast time scales that often are very difficult or impossible to obtain from experiments alone. Among theoretical strategies, the application of hybrid quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics (QM/MM) models is an important approach that has reached an evident degree of maturity, resulting in several important contributions to the field.

Extensive atomistic molecular dynamics simulations have been employed to study the structure and molecular orientational relaxation of azobenzene-based monolayers grafted to a solid substrate. Systems with surface coverage of 0.6 nm(2)/molecule were investigated over a wide temperature range ranging from 298 K, where the mesogens show local ordering and the monolayer dynamics was found to be glassy, up to 700 K, where the azobenzene groups have a nearly isotropic orientational distribution, with a subnanosecond characteristic orientational relaxation time scale.

Spatially close azo dyes with sub-nanosecond switching speeds and exceptional temporal resolution.

Photoswitchable bis-azo dyes with an outstanding temporal resolution of 10(15) times between the thermal relaxation rates of their two constituting photochromes are reported. Remarkably, the close spatial proximity of both azo photochromes in these molecular assemblies translates in an unprecedented 10(3) -fold acceleration of the thermal isomerization rate of their faster azo unit compared to the one displayed by the isolated counterpart. Indeed, the relaxation time of the fast-isomerizing platform of the herein reported bis-azobenzenes is as low as 200 ps under ambient conditions.
