Microscopic poly(styrene-divinylbenzene) beads coated with a monomolecular film of fibrinogen agglutinate when stirred in the presence of thrombin, a consequence of interbead fibrin formation. Trypsin, by digesting bead-bound fibrin, dissociates bead aggregates at a rate proportional to the amount of enzyme activity. The agglutination of beads and the dissociation of bead aggregates can be monitored turbidimetrically using a platelet aggregometer or other photometric device equipped with a stirred cell. We have exploited the behavior of aggregates of fibrin-coated beads to develop a rapid, sensitive, and accurate method for measuring the activity of trypsin and its inhibition, in aqueous media, including serum. The new method yields serum antitrypsin activity levels that correlate well with immunological levels of alpha1-antitrypsin and, thus, may prove useful for assessing antitrypsin activity in clinical specimens.

Background: Little is known about the role that charitable copay assistance (CPA) plays in addressing access to care and financial distress. The study sought to evaluate financial distress and experience with CPA among patients with cancer and autoimmune disease.

Methods: This is a national cross-sectional self-administered anonymous electronic survey conducted among recipients of CPA to cover the costs of a drug for cancer or autoimmune disease.

Background: Childhood obesity prevalence remains high, especially in racial and ethnic minority populations with low incomes. This epidemic is attributed to various dietary behaviors, including increased consumption of energy-dense foods and sugary beverages and decreased intake of fruits and vegetables. Interactive, technology-based approaches are emerging as promising tools to support health behavior changes.

Disease-Specific Speech Movement Characteristics of the Tongue and Jaw.

J Speech Lang Hear Res

January 2025

Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN.

Purpose: To advance our understanding of disease-specific articulatory impairment patterns in speakers with dysarthria, this study investigated the articulatory performance of the tongue and jaw in speakers with differing neurological diseases (Parkinson's disease [PD], amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, and Huntington's disease).

Method: Fifty-seven speakers with dysarthria and 30 controls produced the sentence "Buy Kaia a kite" five times. A three-dimensional electromagnetic articulography was used to record the articulatory movements of the posterior tongue and jaw.

Importance: Perioperative bleeding is common in general surgery. The POISE-3 (Perioperative Ischemic Evaluation-3) trial demonstrated efficacy of prophylactic tranexamic acid (TXA) compared with placebo in preventing major bleeding without increasing vascular outcomes in noncardiac surgery.

Objective: To determine the safety and efficacy of prophylactic TXA, specifically in general surgery.

Nondestructive Mechanical Characterization of Bioengineered Tissues by Digital Holography.

ACS Biomater Sci Eng

Mechanical Engineering Department, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, Massachusetts 01609, United States.

Mechanical properties of engineered connective tissues are critical for their success, yet modern sensors that measure physical qualities of tissues for quality control are invasive and destructive. The goal of this work was to develop a noncontact, nondestructive method to measure mechanical attributes of engineered skin substitutes during production without disturbing the sterile culture packaging. We optimized a digital holographic vibrometry (DHV) system to measure the mechanical behavior of Apligraf living cellular skin substitute through the clear packaging in multiple conditions: resting on solid agar as when the tissue is shipped, on liquid media in which it is grown, and freely suspended in air as occurs when the media is removed for feeding.
