We show that a Dirac Hamiltonian with equal scalar and vector harmonic oscillator potentials has not only a spin symmetry but a U(3) symmetry and that a Dirac Hamiltonian with scalar and vector harmonic oscillator potentials equal in magnitude but opposite in sign has not only a pseudospin symmetry but a pseudo-U(3) symmetry. We derive the generators of the symmetry for each case.

Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods represent a powerful family of computational techniques for tackling complex quantum many-body problems and performing calculations of stationary state properties. QMC is among the most accurate and powerful approaches to the study of electronic structure, but its application is often hindered by a steep learning curve; hence it is rarely addressed in undergraduate and postgraduate classes. This tutorial is a step toward filling this gap.

We propose an estimator that allows us to calculate the value of a simple system's partition function using finite sampling. The core idea is to neglect the contribution from high energy microstates, which are difficult to be sampled properly, and then calculate a volume correction term to compensate for this. As a proof of concept, the estimator is applied to calculate the partition function for several model systems, ranging from a simple harmonic oscillator to a Lennard-Jones fluid with hundreds of particles.

The molecular characteristics and rheological properties of three UHMWPE samples were investigated. The high-temperature GPC method was used for characterizing UHMWPE samples used. The interpretation of the measurement results was based on calibration using the PS standard and the approximation of the PS data by linear and cubic polynomials, as well as on the data for linear PE.

Anxiety is a widespread mental health issue, and binaural beats have been explored as a potential non-invasive treatment. EEG data reveal changes in neural oscillation and connectivity linked to anxiety reduction; however, harmonics introduced during signal acquisition and processing often distort these findings. Existing methods struggle to effectively reduce harmonics and capture the fine-grained temporal dynamics of EEG signals, leading to inaccurate feature extraction.

We study two harmonic oscillators with high quality factors, driven by equilibrium and off equilibrium thermal noise, the latter mimicked by establishing a temperature gradient. The two oscillators are coupled via a third reciprocal harmonic interaction. We deepen the case of a weak coupling between the two oscillators, and show the emergence of a "spike" in the displacement variance of the colder oscillator, when the respective elastic constants approach each other.
