We predict the existence of surface waves in layered superconductors in the THz frequency range, below the Josephson plasma frequency omega J. This wave propagates along the vacuum-superconductor interface and dampens in both transverse directions out of the surface (i.e., towards the superconductor and towards the vacuum). This is the first prediction of propagating surface waves in any superconductor. These predicted surface Josephson plasma waves are important for different phenomena, including the complete suppression of the specular reflection from a sample (Wood's anomalies) and a huge enhancement of the wave absorption (which can be used as a THz detector).

Electromagnetic waves propagating in a layered superconductor with arbitrary momentum, with respect to the main crystallographic directions, exhibit an unavoidable mixing between longitudinal and transverse degrees of freedom. Here we show that this basic physical mechanism explains the emergence of a well-defined absorption peak in the in-plane optical conductivity when light propagates at small tilting angles relative to the stacking direction in layered cuprates. More specifically, we show that this peak, often interpreted as a spurious leakage of the -axis Josephson plasmon, is instead a signature of the true longitudinal plasma mode occurring at larger momenta.

Background: Recent data suggest female sex imparts a survival benefit after trauma in adults. The independent associations between patient sex and age with outcomes have not been examined in children with life-threatening hemorrhage (LTH) from all etiologies.
Study Design And Methods: In a secondary analysis of a multicenter prospective observational study of children with LTH, Massive Transfusion in Children (MATIC), we analyzed if patient sex and age were associated with differences in severity of illness, therapies, and outcomes.

Nonlinear responses of superconductors to intense terahertz radiation has been an active research frontier. Using terahertz pump-terahertz probe spectroscopy, we investigate the -axis nonlinear optical response of a high-temperature superconducting cuprate. After excitation by a single-cycle terahertz pump pulse, the reflectivity of the probe pulse oscillates as the pump-probe delay is varied.
