Many regulatory agencies require that all building materials and industrial waste be tested for their naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) concentrations before they can be used or thrown away. Usually the NORM concentrations of 40K, 232Th and 238U are measured by gamma-ray spectrometry using high-purity germanium or NaI(Tl) detectors. 40K is measured through its 1460.8 keV gamma line, which is mixed with 1459.2 keV line of 228Ac from the chain of 232Th. This fact ignored till now, requires a correction in the computation of 40K concentration. Although in many cases the error is <1%, there are cases where there have been higher errors. It should be emphasised that even if the correction in 40K concentration is large, the correction of the external dose index is negligible owing to the weighing factor being higher for 232Th than for 40K (by at least a factor of 10).

Plant test systems are a sensitive way to detect the genetic effects of various contaminants in environmental compartments: water, soil and sediments. Biotesting of the genotoxicity of soil samples with various activity concentrations of naturally occurring (Ra, Th, K) and artificial (Cs) radionuclides in soil, from the territory of the Aragats Massif (Armenia) was carried out with the application of the micronucleus (Trad-MСN) and stamen hair mutation (Trad-SHM) bioassays of (clone 02) model test-object in the soil - plant system. Undisturbed soil sampling was performed in the southern slopes of the Aragats Massif, from different altitudes (from 1000 to 3200 m above sea level).

The Canadian Guidelines for the Management of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) have been developed to manage radiation doses received in workplaces involving NORM, such as mineral extraction and processing, oil and gas production, metal recycling or water treatment facilities. This management strategy works well for most naturally occurring radioactive materials in workplaces, with the exception of radon. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas generated by the decay of uranium-bearing minerals in rocks and soils.

Coal mined in the shut-down Raša mine in Istria, Croatia had a high organic sulphur content. What has remained of its local combustion is a coal and ash waste (legacy site) whose trace element and radionuclide composition in soil has enduring consequences for the environment.
