Background: Stiff Person Spectrum Disorders (SPSD) are classically defined by the presence of muscle stiffness, spasms and hyperactivity of the central nervous system. There is a notable correlation between neurophysiological features and the clinical hallmark of SPSD, which has greatly encouraged the use of these techniques for diagnostic purposes. Besides, electrophysiological techniques allow for a functional evaluation of the 'hyperactivity of the CNS', thus offering the opportunity to clarify the mechanisms underlying this disorder.

Purpose: Pain is a multidimensional, unpleasant emotional and sensory experience, and accurately assessing its intensity is crucial for effective management. However, individuals with cognitive impairments or language deficits may struggle to accurately report their pain. EEG provides insight into the neurological aspects of pain, while facial EMG captures the sensory and peripheral muscle responses.

Study Design: A prospective web-based survey.

Purpose: Although intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) is critical in spine surgery, its usage is largely based on the surgeon's discretion, and studies on its usage trends in Asia-Pacific countries are lacking. This study aimed to examine current trends in IONM usage in Asia-Pacific countries.

Introduction: Time perception is a fundamental cognitive function, the brain mechanisms of which are not fully understood. Recent electroencephalography (EEG) studies have shown that neural oscillations in specific frequency bands may play a role in this process. In the current study, we sought to investigate how neurophysiological activity of cortical structures relates to subjective time estimations.

Visual Exploration and the Primate Hippocampal Formation.

Hippocampus

Department of Neurobiology and Biophysics, University of Washington School of Medicine, Washington National Primate Research Center, Seattle, Washington, USA.

During the 1990s and early 2000s, research in humans and in the nonhuman primate model of human amnesia revealed that tasks involving free viewing of images provided an exceptionally sensitive measure of recognition memory. Performance on these tasks was sensitive to damage restricted to the hippocampus as well as to damage that included medial temporal lobe cortices. Early work in my laboratory used free-viewing tasks to assess the neurophysiological correlates of recognition memory, and the use of naturalistic visual exploration opened rich avenues to assess other aspects of the impact of eye movements on neural activity in the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex.
