This is the first of three articles which consider the holistic care required by children with a disability and their families. Although the articles mainly address care of children with disabilities in the acute hospital setting, the concepts and knowledge can be transferred to care in other settings. The articles aim to provide a summary of the main subject areas while prompting readers to revisit their own opinions and experiences. This article provides an overview of: commonly used terminolgy; receiving the news that your child has a disability; impact on family members; and relevant social policy. The second and third articles cover: the therapeutic use of self; the value of communication; meeting complex needs on a paediatric ward and multi-diciplinary working.

In this commentary, we, a recent Master of Public Health (MPH) graduate with hearing loss and a course instructor, share what we learned about classroom accessibility while participating in a semester-long qualitative research methods course offered during the COVID-19 pandemic. We complement our reflections on working together with findings from a student field project focused on the lived classroom experiences of graduate students with hearing loss. The field project revealed that students adapted to increased communication challenges in their learning environments without requesting official accommodations due to stigma and a desire to limit their burden on others.

Background: Women aging with disabilities experience higher rates of chronic pain and co-occurring depressive symptoms than women without disabilities and men with and without disabilities. Pain and depression can exacerbate the inability to fulfill social roles and complete activities of daily living among women with disabilities. Although there are existing interventions for both pain and depressive symptoms, few interventions have been developed with women aging with disabilities that address both chronic pain and depressive symptoms.
