We report the first examples of metal dithiolenes belonging to the class [M(R-dmet)(2)] [R-dmet = formally monoreduced N-substituted thiazolidine-2,4,5-trithione; R = Et, M = Ni (1), Pd (2), Pt (3)]. A comparative spectroscopic, electrochemical, and density functional theory theoretical investigation indicates that [M(R-dmet)(2)] complexes show features intermediate between those of the dithiolenes belonging to the previously reported classes [M(R,R'-timdt)(2)] and [M(dmit)(2)] (R,R'-timdt = formally monoreduced N,N'-disubstituted imidazolidine-2,4,5-trithione; dmit = 2-thioxo-1,3-dithiole-4,5-dithiolato). UV-vis-near-IR spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry/differential pulsed voltammetry measurements performed on 1 and 3 proved that the new dithiolenes are stable as neutral, monoanionic, and bianionic species and feature a near-IR electrochromic absorption falling at about 1000 and 1250 nm for neutral and monoanionic species, respectively.

Formate dehydrogenases (FDH) reversibly catalyze the interconversion of CO to formate. They belong to the family of molybdenum and tungsten-dependent oxidoreductases. For several decades, scientists have been synthesizing structural and functional model complexes inspired by these enzymes.

Spectroelectrochemical (SEC) analyses combine spectroscopic measurements with electrochemical techniques and can provide deep insight into complex multi-component chemical reaction systems. SEC experiments typically produce large amounts of spectroscopic data. Chemometric techniques are required for the data analysis and aim at extracting the underlying pure component information.

Metal bis(1,2-dithiolene) complexes belonging to the class [Ni(Ar-edt)] [Ar-edt = arylethylene-1,2-dithiolate; Ar = phenyl, (), 2-naphthyl (); = 0 and 1] were fully characterized by NMR, UV-visible-near-infrared (UV-vis-NIR), diffuse reflectance, and FT-IR spectroscopy, as well as cyclic voltammetry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. These complexes have emerged as new photoconducting materials that allowed for the development of a prototype of photodetectors with response in the vis-NIR region. The photodetecting devices showed in some cases quantum efficiencies orders of magnitude higher than those of previously reported 1,2-dithiolene systems.

The oxidoreductase YdhV in Escherichia coli has been predicted to belong to the family of molybdenum/tungsten cofactor (Moco/Wco)-containing enzymes. In this study, we characterized the YdhV protein in detail, which shares amino acid sequence homology with a tungsten-containing benzoyl-CoA reductase binding the bis-W-MPT (for metal-binding pterin) cofactor. The cofactor was identified to be of a bis-Mo-MPT type with no guanine nucleotides present, which represents a form of Moco that has not been found previously in any molybdoenzyme.
