Therapeutic options for the treatment of cancer-associated thrombosis.

Semin Oncol Nurs

The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, Department of Family Medicine, Research Division, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Piscataway, NJ, USA.

Published: November 2005

Objective: To provide oncology nurses with an understanding of therapeutic options for cancer-associated thrombosis, strategies to prevent recurrence, and practical issues in patient management.

Data Sources: Primary and tertiary literature and the author's clinical experience.

Conclusion: Oncology nurses monitor patients throughout the care continuum for signs and symptoms indicating vascular thromboembolism and need to know the steps to take to expedite an accurate diagnosis and ensure prompt treatment.

Implications For Nursing Practice: Oncology nurses must keep informed about the evolving evidence that leads to practice changes. They should be able to teach patients about therapeutic options and their potential for improving outcomes.

Human PBMC-based humanized mice exhibit myositis features and serve as a drug evaluation model.

Inflamm Regen

January 2025

Oncology & Immunology Unit, Research Division, Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corporation, Kanagawa, 227-0033, Japan.

Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) are a group of autoimmune disorders characterized by immune cell infiltration of muscle tissue accompanied by inflammation. Treatment of IIMs is challenging, with few effective therapeutic options due to the lack of appropriate models that successfully recapitulate the features of IIMs observed in humans. In the present study, we demonstrate that immunodeficient mice transplanted with human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (hPBMCs) exhibit the key pathologic features of myositis observed in humans and develop graft-versus-host disease.

Background: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a highly aggressive cancer with limited treatment options and a poor prognosis. The critical role of epigenetic alterations such as changes in DNA methylation, histones modifications, and chromatin remodeling, in pancreatic tumors progression is becoming increasingly recognized. Moreover, in PDAC these aberrant epigenetic mechanisms can also limit therapy efficacy.

Background: The treatment options to delay the progression of diabetic nephropathy (DN), a key contributor to chronic kidney disease (CKD), are urgently needed. Previous studies reported that traditional Chinese medicine Panax notoginseng (PNG) exerted beneficial effects on DN. However, the renoprotective effects of Notoginsenoside R2 (NR2), an active component of PNG, on DN have not been investigated.

Background: Late-onset Pompe disease (LOPD) is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder that results in severe progressive proximal muscle weakness. Over time, reductions in muscle strength result in respiratory failure and a loss of ambulation. Delayed diagnosis of LOPD deprives patients of treatments that can enhance quality of life and potentially slow disease progression.

A fishnet between nasopharyngeal carcinoma and resistance: the competing endogenous RNA network.

Curr Treat Options Oncol

January 2025

Pathology Department of The First Dongguan Affiliated Hospital, Guangdong Medical University, Dongguan, 523713, China.

Chemotherapy and radiotherapy (chemo-/radiotherapy) have advanced as the main treatment modalities for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), improving patient survival rates. However, chemo-/radiotherapy resistance in NPC cells has emerged as a key factor contributing to poor prognosis. Recently, competing endogenous RNA networks (ceRNETs) have garnered attention for their potential clinical value in studying chemo-/radiotherapy resistance.
