AI Article Synopsis

  • The study analyzed 21 HIV/AIDS cases at Uludag University Medical Faculty from 1997-2003, focusing on their epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory aspects.
  • 90% of the cases were heterosexual, and 9 diagnoses were found incidentally during blood donations or routine testing.
  • The non-compliance rate to antiretroviral treatment was 76%, primarily due to difficulties in accessing the required medications, with common opportunistic infections including oropharyngeal candidiasis, herpes zoster, and community-acquired pneumonia.

Article Abstract

In this study, 21 HIV/AIDS cases (18 male, 3 female; age range 17-64 years), followed up in the Department of Infectious Diseases of Uludag University Medical Faculty between 1997-2003 have been analyzed retrospectively, by means of epidemiological, clinical and laboratory aspects. Nineteen (90%) of them were heterosexual, and in 9 cases the diagnosis was coincidental during the blood donations or routine testing. The non-compliance rate of patients to antiretroviral treatment was found as 76%, and the most important factor for non-compliance was the difficulty in providing antiretroviral drugs. The most frequently encountered opportunistic infections were oropharyngeal candidiasis (n:5), herpes zoster (n:4) and community acquired pneumonia (n:4).

Objective: Isolated rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) is, in most cases, an early stage of Parkinson's disease or related disorders. Diagnosis requires an overnight video-polysomnogram (vPSG), however, even for sleep experts, interpreting vPSG data is challenging. Using a 3D camera, automated analysis of movements has yielded high accuracy.

Alzheimers Dement

Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre, University of Tasmania, Hobart, TAS, Australia.

Background: Finding low-cost, accessible methods to detect people with early-stage Alzheimer's disease is a research priority for neuroprotective drug development. Subtle motor impairment of gait occurs years before episodic memory decline but there has been little investigation of whether self-administered hand motor tests can detect this pre-symptomatic period. This study evaluated how home-based unsupervised keyboard tapping tests from the TAS Test protocol predict episodic memory performance in a sample of older adults without overt cognitive impairment, as a potential indicative measure of early Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimers Dement

Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre, University of Tasmania, Hobart, TAS, Australia.

Background: Finding low-cost, accessible methods to detect people at risk of preclinical Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a research priority for neuroprotective drug development and clinical trials. Sub-clinical asymptomatic decline in episodic memory is a proxy measure of preclinical AD and there is emerging evidence that analysis of motor patterns using laboratory apparatus may detect this stage. There has been little investigation of whether self-administrated simple hand motor tests using personal computers in an unsupervised environment can detect preclinical AD.

David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA, USA.

Background: AD prevention and early detection are crucial to reduce prevalence projections in Latinos. Despite these projections, our community partners in Los Angeles County continue to disclose barriers in accessing culturally and linguistically congruent bilingual programs activating behavioral modifications for AD prevention and early identification of cognitive changes. In this study, we partnered with community organizations to co-design and pilot a brain health prevention program tailored to the needs of their constituents.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Alzheimer's Disease International, London, United Kingdom.

Background: In 2017, all 194 Member States of the World Health Organization (WHO) unanimously adopted the Global Action Plan on the public health response to dementia 2017-2025, the primary aim being for countries to implement National Dementia Plans (NDP). However, as outlined in Alzheimer's Disease International's (ADI) recent From Plan to Impact report, WHO Member States have been far too slow to act - falling far short of the 146 countries target. In response, ADI launched the #WhatsYourPlan campaign, in collaboration with ADI Members, with the single-minded aim of galvanising governments to act on their 2017 commitment.
