Experiments were carried out on cats under deep nembutal anaesthesia. Local cortical stimulation evoked both a slow negative potential (SNP) and an increase in extracellular potassium ([K+]o) which were maximal in the upper cortical layers. The decline in the K(+)-potential in deeper layers was slower than in the upper ones so that with time [K+]o became equal in upper and deeper layers. No SNP was recorded at that time, perhaps explaining why K(+)-potential decay is of longer duration than the SNP. Transcallosal stimulation also evoked an SNP but gave a lesser difference in delta [K+]o in upper and deeper layers. The lower amplitude of the SNP evoked by transcallosal stimulation may be due to these circumstances. These data could clarify the mechanism of correlation disturbance between SNPs and K(+)-potentials in the cerebral cortex.

Introduction: The hippocampal formation exhibits complex and context-dependent activity patterns and dynamics, e.g., place cell activity during spatial navigation in rodents or remapping of place fields when the animal switches between contexts.

ConspectusZinc metal batteries (ZMBs) appear to be promising candidates to replace lithium-ion batteries owing to their higher safety and lower cost. Moreover, natural reserves of Zn are abundant, being approximately 300 times greater than those of Li. However, there are some typical issues impeding the wide application of ZMBs.

Epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) is one of the most severe clinical manifestations of human adenovirus ocular surface infection, which may lead to the formation of subepithelial infiltrates (SEIs) in the anterior corneal stroma in 20-50 % of cases. SEIs may be asymptomatic or give rise to corneal aberrations and visual impairment for months or years after acute infection, despite treatments. Here, we describe the ultrastructural and immunophenotypic features of the anterior corneal stroma of a patient who underwent superficial anterior lamellar keratoplasty (SALK) surgery to remove corneal opacities related to clinically significant and steroid-unresponsive, long-lasting SEIs after adenoviral EKC.

The trophectoderm (TE) is the first tissue to differentiate during the preimplantation development of the mammalian embryo. It forms the outer layer of the blastocyst and is responsible for generating the blastocoel, a fluid-filled cavity whose expansion is essential for successful hatching and implantation. Here, we investigated the role of the small GTPase RHOA in the morphogenesis of the TE, particularly its relationship with HIPPO signaling, using mouse embryos as a model.

Frequency-domain near-infrared spectroscopy (FD-NIRS) is a noninvasive method for quantitatively measuring optical absorption and scattering in tissue. This study introduces structured interrogation (SI) as an interference-based approach for implementing FD-NIRS in order to enhance optical property estimation in multilayered tissues and sensitivity to deeper layers. We find that, in the presence of realistic noise, SI accurately estimates properties and chromophore concentrations with less than a 5% error.
