Although Nitrosomonas europaea lacks measurable alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase activity, the recent completion of the genome sequence revealed the presence of the genes encoding the enzyme. A knockout mutation was created in the sucA gene encoding the E1 subunit. Compared to wild-type cells, the mutant strain showed an accelerated loss of ammonia monooxygenase and hydroxylamine oxidoreductase activities upon entering stationary phase. In addition, unlike wild-type cells, the mutant strain showed a marked lag in the ability to resume growth in response to pH adjustments in late stationary phase.

Antarctica's harsh environmental conditions, characterized by high levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, pose challenges for microorganisms. To survive in these extreme cold regions with heightened UV exposure, microorganisms employ various adaptive strategies, including photoprotective carotenoid synthesis. Carotenoids are garnering attention in the skin health industry because of their UV photoprotection potential, given the direct relationship between UV exposure and skin burns, and cancer.

Previous studies showed no improvement in bacterial biomass for Puniceispirillum marinum IMCC1322 under light regimes. Nevertheless, in nutrient-replete cultures with higher inoculating cell densities, strain IMCC1322 exhibited proteorhodopsin photoheterotrophy. Increasing both inoculum size and the amino acid pool can eliminate quorum sensing and starvation responses in strain IMCC1322.

Hanbury-Brown and Twiss (HBT) effect is the foundation for stellar intensity interferometry. However, it is a phase insensitive two-photon interference effect. Here we extend the HBT interferometer by mixing intensity-matched reference fields with the input fields before intensity correlation measurement.

Wide-ranging sophisticated physiological activities of cell membranes are associated with changes in fatty acid structure and composition. The cfa gene is a core regulator of cell membrane fatty acid cyclopropanation reaction. Its encoded cyclopropane fatty acid synthase (CFA synthase) catalyzes the binding of unsaturated fatty acid (UFA) to methylene groups, which undergoes cyclopropanation modification to produce cyclopropane fatty acids (CFAs).

Beta-hydroxy ketones can be reduced using a sequence of ruthenium-catalyzed silyl etherification followed by tetrabutylammonium fluoride (TBAF) promoted intramolecular hydrosilylation. Switching from TBAF to tetrabutylammonium difluorotriphenylsilicate (TBAT), even without first forming the silyl ether, gave cyclic dioxasilinane products. These somewhat sensitive compounds could be isolated pure by column chromatography using florisil as the stationary phase.
