Laser-induced acoustic desorption (LIAD) coupled with a 3-T Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer (FT-ICR) allows the simultaneous analysis of both the nonpolar and polar components in petroleum distillates. The LIAD/FT-ICR method was validated by examining model compounds representative of the various classes of polar and nonpolar hydrocarbons commonly found in petroleum. LIAD successfully desorbs all the compounds as intact neutral molecules into the FT-ICR. Electron ionization (EI) at low energies (10 eV) and chemical ionization using cyclopentadienyl cobalt radical cation (CpCo*+) were employed to ionize the desorbed molecules. The EI experiments lead to extensive fragmentation of many of the hydrocarbon compounds studied. However, the CpCo*+ ion ionizes all the hydrocarbon compounds by producing only pseudomolecular ions without other fragmentation, with the exception of one compound (*CH3 loss occurs). Examination of two different petroleum distillate samples revealed hundreds of compounds. The most abundant components have an even molecular weight; i.e., they are likely to contain no (or possibly an even number of) nitrogen atoms.

Background: Fast and accurate classification of steel can effectively improve industrial production efficiency. In recent years, the use of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) in conjunction with other techniques for material classification has been developing. Plasma Acoustic Emission Signal (PAES) is a type of modal information separate from spectra that is detected using LIBS, and it can reflect some of the sample's physicochemical information.

The interaction of high-frequency surface acoustic waves (SAWs) and excitons in van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) offers challenging opportunities to explore novel quantum effects and functionalities. We probe the interaction of neutral excitons, trions, and biexcitons with SAWs in a hBN/WSe/hBN vdWH. We show that neutral excitons respond weakly to the SAW stimulus at 5 K.

Light-matter interaction at the nanoscale in magnetic alloys and heterostructures is a topic of intense research in view of potential applications in high-density magnetic recording. While the element-specific dynamics of electron spins is directly accessible to resonant x-ray pulses with femtosecond time structure, the possible element-specific atomic motion remains largely unexplored. We use ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) to probe the temporal evolution of lattice Bragg peaks of FePt nanoparticles embedded in a carbon matrix following excitation by an optical femtosecond laser pulse.

Perfluorocarbon (PFC) droplets represent a novel class of phase-shift contrast agent with promise in applications in biomedical and bioengineering fields. PFC droplets undergo a fast liquid-gas transition upon exposure to acoustic or optical triggering, offering a potential adaptable and versatile tool as contrast agent in diagnostic imaging and localized drug delivery vehicles in therapeutics systems. In this paper, we utilize advanced imaging techniques to investigate ultra-high-speed inertial dynamics and rectified quasi-static (low-speed) diffusion evolution of optically induced PFC droplet vaporization within three different hydrogels, each of different concentrations, examining effects such as droplet size and PFC core on bubble dynamics and material viscoelastic properties.
