An existing method was adapted to the purpose and validated in-house according to the IUPAC harmonised guideline for the determination of 15 EU priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in primary smoke condensates (PSCs) that are used to produce smoke flavourings for human consumption. Limits of detection (LOD) varied between 0.1 and 1.3 microg/kg, limits of quantitation (LOQ) between 0.5 and 4 microg/kg for the various PAHs in PSCs. The coefficient of variance of the repeatability was between 0.7% (benzo[a]pyrene) and 30% (dibenzo[a,h]pyrene) relative standard deviation, depending on the analyte. The recoveries varied between 100 and 102% (dibenzo[a,l]pyrene) and 69-83% (dibenzo[a,h]pyrene) over the analytical range of 5-35 microg/kg.

This study evaluated a novel ex situ passive sampling biomimetic extraction (BE) method to estimate toxic potency in sediments. Gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID) analysis of polydimethylsiloxane fibers equilibrated with field sediments was used to quantify bioavailable polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and other unresolved, site-specific contaminant mixtures. This method is biomimetic because contaminants partition to the fiber based on hydrophobicity and abundance, and GC-FID quantification accounts for all constituents absorbed to the fiber that may contribute to toxicity.

Coal tar-related products as a source of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) are particularly concerning due to high PAC concentrations and inadequate source management. Benzo[b]carbazole, a benzocarbazole isomer exclusively found in coal tar-derived products, acts as an ideal marker to distinguish coal tar sources from others, enabling more robust quantification of coal tar contributions to PACs. To evaluate the historical and recent contributions of coal tar-related sources to the levels of PACs in Lake Ontario and associated ecological risk, we analyzed 31 PACs and 3 BCBz isomers in surface sediments and a sediment core.

The extensive application of cement kiln industry results in substantial stack gas emissions, posing a potential risk of discharging organic pollutants. Cement industry is not considered as a primary contributor to persistent organic pollutants like polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs), owing to its extremely low emission factor. However, knowledge on the previously unrecognized chemicals that may possess higher emission factors from cement industry is lacking.

Chemicals in plastics raise significant concerns for potential adverse environmental and health impacts. However, dissipation kinetics and fluxes of chemicals from outdoor plastic products remain largely uncharacterized, hindering the accurate assessment of their environmental exposure. This study quantified outdoor dissipation profiles for 20 "priority" chemicals, including sunscreens (benzophenone, benzophenone-3, octyl salicylate, etc.

Despite the ubiquity and complexity of atmospheric polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs), many of these compounds are largely unknown and lack sufficient toxicity data for comprehensive risk assessments. In this study, nontarget screening assisted by in-house and self-developed spectra databases was, therefore, employed to identify PACs in atmospheric particulate matter collected from multiple outdoor settings. Additionally, absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity properties were evaluated to indicate PAC's overall abilities to cause adverse outcomes and incorporated into a novel health risk assessment model to assess their inhalation risks.
