Published: December 2005

The first inducible Arthrobacter overexpression system, based on the promoter/operator and the repressor of the 6-D-hydroxynicotine oxidase gene of Arthrobacter nicotinovorans, is described here. Nicotine-dependent overproduction and affinity purification of recombinant proteins are presented. The system will allow the production of complex enzymes and genetic complementation studies in Arthrobacter species.

In previous studies was isolated and screened for antimicrobial activity. Further, secondary metabolites were isolated and screened for antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity . The current study determines if increased exposure of Hela cells to the secondary metabolites over time increases the cytotoxicity.

Rapid arsenite oxidation by Paenarthrobacter nicotinovorans strain SSBW5: unravelling the role of GlpF, aioAB and aioE genes.

Laboratory of Bacterial Genetics and Environmental Biotechnology, Department of Microbiology, Goa University, Taleigao Plateau, Goa, 403206, India.

A novel arsenite resistant bacterial strain SSBW5 was isolated from the battery waste site of Corlim, Goa, India. This strain interestingly exhibited rapid arsenite oxidation with an accumulation of 5 mM arsenate within 24 h and a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 18 mM. The strain SSBW5 was identified as Paenarthrobacter nicotinovorans using 16S rDNA sequence analysis.

Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest global challenges of the century. Many pathogens have become resistant to antibiotics due to human misuse and effective ones are in short supply. Discovering potential new antibiotic molecules may help to address the current antibiotic shortage.

Background: Paenarthrobacter nicotinovorans ATCC 49919 uses the pyridine-pathway to degrade nicotine and could provide a renewable source of precursors from nicotine-containing waste as well as a model for studying the molecular evolution of catabolic pathways and their spread by horizontal gene transfer via soil bacterial plasmids.

Results: In the present study, the strain was sequenced using the Illumina NovaSeq 6000 and Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT) MinION platforms. Following hybrid assembly with Unicycler, the complete genome sequence of the strain was obtained and used as reference for whole-genome-based phylogeny analyses.
