Pilot studies were carried out for the treatment of pre-hydrolysate liquor (PHL), a high strength effluent (COD: 70,000-80,000 mg/l) emanating from a rayon grade pulp mill using up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor (UASB). Substrate inhibition was avoided with optimum COD feed of around 25,000 mg/l. This was achieved by diluting the PHL with a low strength effluent stream known as alkali back wash (ABW) available in the plant and also by partially recycling the reactor liquid outlet. An optimum organic loading rate (OLR) of 10 could be achieved with a COD reduction of 70-75%, a BOD reduction of 85-90% and a methane yield of 0.31-0.33 m3/kg of COD reduced. The pilot scale studies also revealed that addition of milk of lime (MOL) was essential for neutralization and buffering and DAP and urea to supplement the nutrients in the PHL. Based on the pilot studies, a full-scale high rate biomethanation plant was designed and erected for treating the PHL, which after some modification showed similar performance for COD, BOD reduction and methane yield.

Xylonic acid can be produced with high-yield from hemicelullosic xylose, which accounts for 25% of the total sugars in lignocellulosic material. The key barrier associated with efficient bio-oxidation of hemicellulosic xylose to xylonic acid is the serious foam formed in downstream air-aerated and agitated bioreaction process, which caused by the high viscosity of concentrated pre-hydrolysate. Powdered activated carbon treatment can selectively absorb the non-sugar compounds with relatively low losses of xylose, which is beneficial for the valuable xylose derivatives production.

The use of microorganisms is a promising option for an eco-efficient and successful conversion of hardwood hemicelluloses to biofuels. The focus of this work is the treatment of hemicellulosic pre-hydrolysate by flocculation, followed by simultaneous or separate detoxification with Ureibacillus thermosphaericus and Cupriavidus taiwanensis co-culture, and hydrolysis with Paenibacillus campinasensis. A reduction of phenolic compounds was achieved mainly after flocculation, applied as a first detoxification step, but no increase in sugars concentration was observed.

Enzymatic hydrolysis with endopeptidases can be used to modify the colloidal properties of food proteins. In this study, sodium caseinate was hydrolyzed with Sternzym BP 25201, containing a thermolysin-like endopeptidase from Geobacillus stearothermophilus as the only peptidase, to a DH of 2.3 ± 1%.

One of the major obstacles in process of lignocellulosic biorefinery is the utilization of pre-hydrolysate from pre-treatment. Although lignocellulosic pre-hydrolysate can serve as an economic starting material for xylonic acid production, the advancement of xylonic acid or xylonate is still limited by further commercial value or applications. In the present study, xylose in the high concentration wheat straw pre-hydrolysate was first in-situ biooxidized to xylonate by Gluconobacter oxydans.

The detoxified pre-hydrolysate and enzymatic hydrolysate of OFMSW were used as substrates for lipid production by Cryptococcus aerius. Factorial experimental designs were employed for the optimization of dilute acid pre-hydrolysis, detoxification by over-liming, enzymatic hydrolysis, and lipid production. OFMSW pre-hydrolysis with 3% H2SO4 for 45 min was found to be the optimal treatment, resulted in total sugar concentration of 65.
