Differences in responses to iron deficiency between two legumes: lentil (Lens culinaris) and chickpea (Cicer arietinum).

Published: November 2005

Two legumes, lentil and chickpea, were cultivated in nutrient solutions: Fe lacking or containing 30 microM Fe. After 12 days of Fe starvation, lentil showed a severe yellowing of young leaves, a large decrease in chlorophyll concentration, and a significant decline of plant biomass. Chickpea showed a better response than did lentil, primarily due to a stronger acidification capacity. In addition, no chlorosis symptoms were observed in chickpea until the end of treatment. There was no significant difference in potassium uptake between the two species, but an enrichment of the young leaves at the expense of the old ones was noted in chickpea, and at a lesser extent, in lentil, when they were exposed to Fe deficiency. Moreover, this constraint led to a significant decrease of iron content in the two legumes. However, chickpea displayed higher accumulation levels of HCl-extractible iron in young and old leaves than did lentil. This protection of young leaves against K(+) and Fe(2+) impoverishment confers to these organs the capacity to preserve their chlorophyll status and their photosynthetic integrity. Furthermore, the better performance of chickpea under conditions of low Fe availability could be partially related to its seed iron reserves, higher than those of lentil.

For those with mental health problems, long-term investment in psychiatric care is more than complex. Repairs! 44 strives to change mentalities by drawing on the experiential expertise of its volunteers, so that public opinion becomes aware of the multitude of obstacles these young people face throughout their lives, and aims to make their rights more accessible.

Physalis alkekengi L. is recognized as a significant source of various secondary metabolites, particularly c28 steroidal lactones known as withanolides and physalins, renowned for their therapeutic properties with a rich history in traditional medicine. In this study, we characterized the sequences of key downstream genes (PaFPPS, PaSQS, PaSQE, PaCAS, PaHYD1, and PaDWF5-1) involved in the biosynthesis of withanolides, marking the first characterization of these genes in P.

Young and adult patients with gaming disorder: Psychiatric co-morbidities and progression of problematic gaming.

Sahlgrenska Academy, Institution for Neuroscience and Physiology, Section for Psychiatry and Neurochemistry, University of Gothenburg, Gothenburg, Sweden.

Background: Previous research suggests age-dependent differences in the progression of addiction, and evidence is accumulating, showing that an early initiation of gaming increases the risk for addiction. With the recent introduction of gaming disorder (GD) as a psychiatric diagnosis, there is a need to extend the knowledge of the clinical characteristics of patients seeking treatment for GD of all age groups. Compared to adolescents and young adults, less is known about treatment-seeking adults.

Background: Human breast milk, a naturally balanced source of infant nutrition, promotes optimal growth and health when exclusively fed for 6 months. Exclusive breastfeeding reduces common childhood infections, provides protection against some chronic illnesses, and contributes to achieving several Sustainable Development Goals. Despite its benefits, only 58% of Ethiopian women practice it, and the associated education-related inequality is not well documented.
