In our society, state governments have the major role in regulating physician behavior and actions related to end-of-life decision making. However, in the current confusing and conflicted legal environment, how well are state governments doing with this serious responsibility? The authors of this article report the results of the first statewide survey of Louisiana physicians regarding their knowledge of and compliance with specific parts of one state government's attempt to regulate end-of-life decision making: the Louisiana Natural Death Act (LNDA). Physician respondents were asked to indicate their level of familiarity with the LNDA and several questions examined physician compliance with specific sections contained in the statute. Among many things, the survey revealed most physicians (74%) were not familiar with even the basic provisions of the LNDA, and had not received either medical school or subsequent post graduate training in this area. Based on the results of this survey, the authors offer several policy recommendations that could enhance physician knowledge and subsequent compliance with the LNDA.

The partitioning of global biodiversity into biogeographic regions is critical for understanding the impacts of global-scale ecological and evolutionary processes on species assemblages as well as prioritizing areas for conservation. However, the lack of globally comprehensive data on species distributions precludes fine-scale estimation of biogeographical regionalization for numerous taxa of ecological, economic and conservation interest. Using a recently published phylogeny and novel curated native range maps for over 10 000 species of butterflies around the world, we delineated biogeographic regions for the world's butterflies using phylogenetic dissimilarity.

The Zebrafish International Resource Center (ZIRC) is an NIH-funded national stock center and germplasm repository that maintains and distributes genetically modified and wild-type zebrafish (Danio rerio) lines to the biomedical research community. The ZIRC and its community would benefit from incorporating somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) cloning which would allow the preservation of diploid genomes. The goal of this study was to advance a zebrafish SCNT cloning protocol into a reproducible community-level pathway by use of process mapping and simulation modeling approaches to address training requirements, process constraints, and quality management gaps.

Jawless vertebrates once dominated Palaeozoic waters, but just two lineages have persisted to the present day: lampreys and hagfishes. Living lampreys are a relatively small clade, with just over 50 species described, but knowledge of their evolutionary relationships has always been based on either a few mitochondrial genes or a small number of taxa. Biogeographers have noted the disjunct antitropical distribution of living lamprey families.

Superconducting spintronics explores the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism, sparking substantial interest in nonunitary superconductors as a platform for magneto-superconducting phenomena. However, identifying nonunitary superconductors remains challenging. We demonstrate that spin current driven by thermal gradients sensitively probes the nature of the condensate in nonunitary superconductors.
