Can cry in the newborn be used as an assessment of pain?

Acta Paediatr

Department of Paediatrics, Orebro University Hospital, Orebro, Sweden.

Published: October 2005

Unlabelled: Pain in the neonate is a complex subject. The assessment of pain should be simple and clinically usable. So far, the scales that have been used to assess pain are too time consuming and complex. The analysis of cry in a simple manner, as described in this issue of Acta Paediatrica by Bellieni et al., could be used in a simple and effective way at the bedside.

Conclusion: Since sick and premature newborns are not studied, the scale needs further confirmation.

Unlabelled: We sought to identify counties in the northeastern United States where the incidence of infant botulism (IB) is elevated compared to the nationwide incidence and to assess associations with soil type at the case residence. IB cases were identified through the distribution of the orphan drug Human Botulism Immune Globulin Intravenous for treatment of IB by state and national surveillance systems and were subsequently confirmed by laboratory testing. IB incidence by county was calculated as the number of IB cases divided by the number of live births in the county from 2000 to 2019.

Background: There is little known about the effectiveness of psychological interventions to prevent postpartum depression that focus on the birthing parent and infant dyad. Risk factors for PPD include depression during pregnancy, low parenting self-efficacy, and disrupted parental nocturnal sleep. The brief Practical Resources for Effective Postpartum Parenting (PREPP) intervention is designed for pregnant individuals at-risk for postpartum depression, providing them with 1) caregiving strategies aimed at reducing infant fuss and cry behavior and increasing infant sleep, 2) self-reflection and mindfulness skills and 3) psychoeducation about the postpartum period and infant behavior.

Background: Assessing pain in infants and neonates is challenging due to their inability to communicate verbally. While validated subjective tools exist, they rely on interpreting the child's behavior, leading to potential inconsistencies and underestimation of pain. Based on heart rate variability, the newborn infant parasympathetic evaluation (NIPE) index offers a more objective approach to pain assessment in children under 2 years.
