Published: December 2005

Cardiac luxation is a rare but potentially fatal consequence of blunt thoracic trauma. We present a case of a pericardial tear with cardiac luxation following blunt chest trauma. It is hypothesised that the cardiac luxation occurred while log rolling the patient during the initial assessment. This report stresses the need to be aware of the potential for such a complication.

Bronchogenic cysts are a rare congenital condition, and their association with pericardial agenesis is even more uncommon. We present the case of a 23-year-old patient who was diagnosed with an upper lobe bronchogenic cyst and subsequently underwent an upper lobectomy. Further evaluation revealed the presence of complete left pericardial agenesis.

Objective: To evaluate the pathologic ocular changes in a population of aquarium-housed Monodactylus argenteus and investigate potential underlying causes for the large number of affected fish in this exhibit.

Persistent left superior vena cava (LSVC) that drains into the left atrium (LA) via the left superior pulmonary vein (LSPV) is a rare systemic venous drainage anomaly. It can cause cyanosis and unexplained recurrent strokes. Undiagnosed, it can seriously disrupt the conduct of the cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), causing sudden air lock and/or flooding of the operative field with venous blood.

Cardiac luxation is a rare condition in cases of blunt thoracic trauma, yet it is quite fatal. We present a case of a 28-year-old man, admitted to the emergency room after a motorcycle accident in a hemodynamically unstable condition and radiographic presentation of multiple rib fractures, bilateral pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum, and significant dislocation of the heart to the right. After performing emergency bilateral tube thoracostomy and achieving hemodynamic stability, a CT scan was performed and the patient was diagnosed with pericardial rupture with right-sided luxation of the heart.
