Reduction of perception of chronic fatigue in an observational study of patients receiving 12 weeks of Kampo therapy.

Department of Frontier Japanese-Oriental (Kampo) Medicine, Graduate School of Medicine, Chiba University, Inohana, Chiba, Japan.

Published: October 2005

Objective: The aim of this study was to observe the influence of Kampo therapy on latent chronic fatigue of patients with chronic diseases.

Subjects: One hundred and seventy-three (173) consecutive patients with chronic diseases came to our department for the first time.

Design: This was a prospective study. Patients were divided into two groups: a chronic fatigue group (CFG) and a nonchronic fatigue group (NCFG). Based on Kampo diagnosis, both groups were prescribed Kampo formulae as an extract or decoction for 12 weeks.

Outcome Measures: By using questionnaires, patients were assessed concerning their physical and mental types of fatigue, their sleep situation, and their attitude toward work or housekeeping, both before and after 12 weeks of treatment, according to Kampo diagnosis.

Results: The mental fatigue, physical fatigue, and sleep scores of both groups, and the work score of CFG, were decreased. The rate of reduction of the fatigue score was significantly greater in CFG than in NCFG. The factor responsible for this difference in fatigue score was physical fatigue.

Conclusions: A reduction of the perception of chronic fatigue was observed in patients receiving 12 weeks of Kampo therapy.

Background: SLE and ME/CFS both present significant fatigue and share immune dysregulation. The mechanisms underlying fatigue in these disorders remain unclear, and there are no standardized treatments. This study aims to explore shared mechanisms and predict potential therapeutic drugs for fatigue in SLE and ME/CFS.

Background: Pain is a prevalent symptom of systemic sclerosis. While previous studies have demonstrated a correlation between higher pain intensity and lower physical function in individuals with systemic sclerosis, the potentially moderating effect of psychosocial factors on the association has yet to be explored.

Methods: This cross-sectional study used data from a fatigue self-management trial for adults with systemic sclerosis.

Background: Chronic kidney disease is a global problem characterized by a progressive decrease in kidney function with associated symptoms. A better understanding of these symptoms could lead to the development of personalized strategies.

Objective: This systematic review aims to describe the clusters of symptoms in kidney failure and categorize them according to their time of onset and how disabling they are for patients.

Current treatments for persistent or chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) are limited by inadequate response, toxicity, and impaired quality of life. The Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitor rilzabrutinib was evaluated to further characterize safety and durability of platelet response. LUNA2 Part B is a multicenter, phase 1/2 study in adults with ITP (≥ 3 months duration, platelet count < 30 × 10/L) who failed ≥ 1 ITP therapy (NCT03395210, EudraCT 2017-004012-19).

Background: Generalised pustular psoriasis (GPP) is a chronic, systemic, neutrophilic inflammatory disease. A previous Delphi panel established areas of consensus on GPP, although patient perspectives were not included, and aspects of treatment goals remain unclear.

Objectives: To identify and achieve consensus on refined, specific treatment goals for GPP treatment via a Delphi panel with patient participation.
