Melanotransferrin (MTf) or tumor antigen p97 is a transferrin homolog that binds one iron (Fe) atom and has been suggested to play roles in a variety of processes, including Fe metabolism, eosinophil differentiation, and plasminogen activation. Considering the vital role of Fe in many metabolic pathways, such as DNA and heme synthesis, it is important to understand the function of MTf. To define this, a MTf knockout (MTf-/-) mouse was generated through targeted disruption of the MTf gene. The MTf-/- mice were viable and fertile and developed normally, with no morphologic or histologic abnormalities. Assessment of Fe indices, tissue Fe levels, hematology, and serum chemistry parameters demonstrated no differences between MTf-/- and wild-type (MTf+/+) mice, suggesting MTf was not essential for Fe metabolism.

Zinc is an essential trace element. The regulatory mechanism of zinc and its transporters in fetal growth in monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA) twins with selective intrauterine growth restriction (MCDA-sIUGR) is unclear. A total of 45 MCDA twins were divided into two groups, MCDA (n=37) and MCDA-sIUGR (n=8), to investigate their possible effects on fetal growth.

This laboratory study aims to assess the effects of misaligning different trifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) under varying spectral and corneal spherical aberration (SA) conditions. With an IOL metrology device under monochromatic and polychromatic conditions, the following models were studied: AT ELANA 841P, AT LISA Tri 839MP, FineVision HP POD F, Acrysof IQ PanOptix, and Tecnis Synergy ZFR00V. The SA was simulated using an aberration-free and average-SA cornea.

The origin of domestic sheep (Ovis aries) can be traced back to the Asian mouflon (Ovis gmelini), in the Near East around 10 000 years ago. Genetic divergence within mouflon populations can occur due to factors such as geographical isolation, social structures, and environmental pressures, leading to different affinities with domestic sheep. However, few studies have reported the extent to which mouflon sheep contribute to domestic sheep in different regions.

There have been disparities reported in prevalence of autism by gender, race, and socioeconomic status with older ages of diagnosis in non-White and in female children. Possible disparities in the ages of autism diagnosis are not well-established within the Military Health System (MHS) pediatric population, where we hypothesized less disparities given universal Tricare coverage for active-duty military families and theoretically equal access to the military treatment facility (MTF). We conducted retrospective cross-sectional analysis using deidentified database repository records from the MHS.

The value of involving people living with diseases in the research process is increasingly recognized by professional associations and regulatory agencies alike. Patient contributions range from disease prevention and diagnosis to medication planning, and from advocacy to guideline production and clinical trial design. Thanks to the efforts of activists and advocates, new models of patient inclusion in medical research are being developed to replace outdated non-participative and tokenistic paradigms.
