Hydrodynamics of a bounded vertical film with nonlinear surface properties.

Published: September 2002

The drainage of a thin liquid film with an insoluble monolayer down a vertical wall is studied. Lubrication theory is used to develop a model where the film is pinned at the top with a given thickness and the film drains into a bath at the bottom. A nonlinear equation of state is used for the surface tension and the surface viscosity is a nonlinear function of the surfactant concentration; these are appropriate for some aqueous systems. The three partial differential equations are solved via discretization in space and then the resulting differential algebraic system is solved. Results are described for a wide range of parameters, and the conditions under which the free surface is immobilized are discussed.

Self-Interacting Dark Sectors in Supernovae Can Behave as a Relativistic Fluid.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

Dipartimento di Fisica e Astronomia, Università degli Studi di Padova, Via Marzolo 8, 35131 Padova, Italy.

We revisit supernova (SN) bounds on a hidden sector consisting of millicharged particles χ and a massless dark photon. Unless the self-coupling is fine-tuned to be small, rather than exiting the SN core as a gas, the particles form a relativistic fluid and subsequent dark QED fireball, streaming out against the drag due to the interaction with matter. Novel bounds due to excessive energy deposition in the mantle of low-energy supernovae can be obtained.

The space of transport coefficients allowed by causality.

Nat Phys

October 2024

Mathematical Sciences and STAG Research Centre, University of Southampton, Highfield, Southampton UK.

As an effective theory, relativistic hydrodynamics is fixed by symmetries up to a set of transport coefficients. A lot of effort has been devoted to explicit calculations of these coefficients. Here we adopt a more general approach, deploying bootstrap techniques to rule out theories that are inconsistent with microscopic causality.

We develop an approximate, analytical model for the velocity of defects in active nematics by combining recent results for the velocity of topological defects in nematic liquid crystals with the flow field generated from individual defects in active nematics. Importantly, our model takes into account the long-range interactions between defects that result from the flows they produce as well as the orientational coupling between defects inherent in nematics. Our work complements previous studies of active nematic defect motion by introducing a linear approximation that allows us to treat defect interactions as two-body interactions and incorporates the hydrodynamic screening length as a tuning parameter.

Atomic nuclei are self-organized, many-body quantum systems bound by strong nuclear forces within femtometre-scale space. These complex systems manifest a variety of shapes, traditionally explored using non-invasive spectroscopic techniques at low energies. However, at these energies, their instantaneous shapes are obscured by long-timescale quantum fluctuations, making direct observation challenging.

The effective treatment of inflammatory diseases, particularly their chronic forms, is a key task of modern medicine. Herein, we report the synthesis and evaluation of biocompatible polymer conjugates based on N-2-(hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide copolymers enabling the controlled release of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA)-based anti-inflammatory drugs under specific stimuli. All polymer nanotherapeutics were proposed as water-soluble drug delivery systems with a hydrodynamic size below 10 nm ensuring suitability for the parenteral application and preventing opsonization by the reticuloendothelial system.
