Dimeric (gemini) surfactants are made up of two amphiphilic moieties connected at the level of, or very close to, the head groups by a spacer group of varying nature: hydrophilic or hydrophobic, rigid or flexible. These surfactants represent a new class of surfactants that is finding its way into surfactant-based formulations. The nature of the spacer group (length, flexibility, chemical structure) has been shown to be of the utmost importance in determining the solution properties of aqueous dimeric surfactants. This paper reviews the effect of the nature of the spacer on some of these properties. The behavior of dimeric surfactants in the submicellar range of concentration, at interfaces, in dilute solution (solubility in water, Krafft temperature, critical micellization concentration, thermodynamics of micelle formation, micelle ionization degree, size, polydispersity, micropolarity and microviscosity, microstructure and rheology of the solutions, solubilization, micelle dynamics, and interaction with polymers) and in concentrated solution (phase behavior) are successively reviewed. Selected results concerning trimeric and tetrameric surfactants are also reviewed.

Rhizomorphs are hair- or wire-like melanized structures with structural differentiation analogous to plant roots that help fungi spread over an area and find food resources. Some species of multiple groups of the and the produce different types of rhizomorphs. In the , the structures are largely found in , particularly in the , , and .

Background: The standard treatment for periprosthetic joint infections (PJI) typically involves a two-stage resection arthroplasty using antibiotic-loaded bone cement (ALBC) spacers. This study hypothesizes that there is no significant correlation between antibiotic levels in blood and synovial fluid and the patient's kidney function, and that the success rates of staged resection arthroplasty are comparable between groups, specifically targeting gram-positive bacterial infections.
Methods: This retrospective review included patients treated from 2017 to 2022 with two-stage arthroplasty using vancomycin-loaded ALBC spacers, selectively targeting gram-positive infections.

Pheophytin-a derivatives possessing plastoquinone and phylloquinone analogs in the peripheral 3-substituent were prepared by Friedel-Crafts reactions of a 3-hydroxymethyl-chlorin as one of the chlorophyll-a derivatives with benzo- and naphthohydroquinones, respectively, and successive oxidation of the 1,4-dihydroxy-aryl groups in the resulting dehydration products. The 3-quinonylmethyl-chlorins exhibited ultraviolet-visible absorption and circular dichroism spectra in acetonitrile, which were composed of those of the starting 3-hydroxymethyl-chlorin and the corresponding methylated benzo- and naphthoquinones. No intramolecular interaction between the chlorin and quinone π-systems was observed in the solution owing to the methylene spacer.
