A 70-year-old male developed eosinophilic pleurisy fifteen years after dantrolene sodium had been started for his spastic paraplegia due to spinocerebellar degeneration. Drug lymphocyte stimulation test (DLST) for dantrolene was positive. After discontinuance of dantrolene, pleural effusion gradually decreased and inflammatory reaction improved. During two-year observation, we have found no relapse of pleurisy without special medication. We present this case and compare this case with other 10 reported cases.

Objective: In this study, we examined the value of chest CT signs combined with peripheral blood eosinophil percentage in differentiating between pulmonary paragonimiasis and tuberculous pleurisy in children.

Methods: Patients with pulmonary paragonimiasis and tuberculous pleurisy were retrospectively enrolled from January 2019 to April 2023 at the Kunming Third People's Hospital and Lincang People's Hospital. There were 69 patients with pulmonary paragonimiasis (paragonimiasis group) and 89 patients with tuberculous pleurisy (tuberculosis group).

Hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) is a rare disease with peripheral blood eosinophils >1500/µL and end-organ damage. We encountered a case of idiopathic HES in a woman in her 60s who presented with dyspnea due to cardiac effusion and bilateral pleural effusions. At first, the patient did not have eosinophilia in the peripheral blood, and the presence of serum pericardial fluid and pleural effusion led to suspicion of carcinomatous pericarditis and pleurisy.

Eur J Clin Microbiol Infect Dis

Toxocariasis is a cosmopolitan helminthiasis linked to contamination with Toxocara cati or Toxocara canis. Only six isolated cases of pleural toxocariasis have been reported in the literature. We describe a case of pleurisy with isolated eosinophilia varying between 600 and 1500/mm likely linked o presumptive toxocariasis in a 72-year-old patient.

In humans, rounded atelectasis is defined as focal lung collapse that radiologically appears as a round mass-like lesion in the periphery of the lung. In general, human patients with rounded atelectasis have a history of pleural effusion and abnormal pleura and characteristic CT findings help to distinguish rounded atelectasis from pulmonary neoplasia without the need for invasive surgical biopsy. This retrospective multi-center case series describes rounded atelectasis in four cats and one dog.

Characteristics of pleural effusion with a high adenosine deaminase level: a case-control study.

BMC Pulm Med

Background: Increased pleural fluid adenosine deaminase (ADA) is useful for diagnosing tuberculous pleurisy (TB), but high ADA levels are associated with other diseases. In this study, we compare various disease characteristics in patients with high-ADA pleural effusion.

Methods: We retrospectively collected data for 456 patients with pleural fluid ADA levels of ≥ 40 U/L from January 2012 to October 2021.
