A 24-year-old carpenter had the shakes and fever on March 13, 1990. He suffered from watery diarrhea on March 14 and 15. He left muscle weakness in his thumbs and fingers when he drove nails with a hammer on March 24. The weakness reached maximum by the 3rd day of illness. He was admitted to our hospital on day 4. Neurological examination revealed symmetrical weakness localized in the intrinsic hand muscles (MRC grade 2-4). The deep tendon reflexes were preserved. Sensation was intact except for mild disturbance of superficial sense on both plantar areas. Campylobacter jejuni was cultured from his stool. A complement fixation test indicated serologically preceding C. jejuni infection. Whereas maximum motor nerve conduction velocities were not reduced and distal latencies were not prolonged, compound muscle action potential recorded in the thenar and hypothenar muscles were remarkably reduced on day 5. Needle EMG showed neuropathic changes in four limbs. Sensory nerve conduction velocities and action potentials were normal. The weakness gradually improved in association with increased compound muscle action potentials in the thenar and hypothenar muscles. His muscle symptom fully resolved 2 months after the onset of his illness. Thin-layer chromatogram with immunostaining revealed that serum IgG from this patient reacted with GM1, GD1a, GD1b, but did not react with GM2 and GT1b. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay showed that anti-GM1, GD1a, GD1b antibodies titer (IgG) decreased concurrently with the clinical improvement.

Introduction: By combining nerve and tendon transfer procedures, a more versatile hand function can be expected. Here we report the long-term outcomes of novel, individualized reconstruction strategies using combined nerve and tendon transfer procedures (CNaTT) to restore prehension and grasp in two patients with tetraplegia.
Case Presentation: Two women, 45 years of age, underwent bilateral nerve transfer according to the Bertelli S-PIN (supinator to posterior interosseous nerve transfer) procedure.

The traditional understanding of brain function has predominantly focused on chemical and electrical processes. However, new research in fruit fly (Drosophila) binocular vision reveals ultrafast photomechanical photoreceptor movements significantly enhance information processing, thereby impacting a fly's perception of its environment and behaviour. The coding advantages resulting from these mechanical processes suggest that similar physical motion-based coding strategies may affect neural communication ubiquitously.

The abundance and behaviour of all hematopoietic components display daily oscillations, supporting the involvement of circadian clock mechanisms. The daily variations of immune cell functions, such as trafficking between blood and tissues, differentiation, proliferation, and effector capabilities are regulated by complex intrinsic (cell-based) and extrinsic (neuro-hormonal, organism-based) mechanisms. While the role of the transcriptional/translational molecular machinery, driven by a set of well-conserved genes (Clock genes), in nucleated immune cells is increasingly recognized and understood, the presence of non-transcriptional mechanisms remains almost entirely unexplored.

This review examines intrinsic and extrinsic augmentation techniques for uniting hand and upper extremity fractures, including bone morphogenic proteins (BMPs), platelet-rich plasma (PRP), low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS), and pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF). While BMPs, PRP, LIPUS, and PEMF show potential in accelerating bone healing and reducing nonunion rates, their clinical adoption is limited by high costs and inconsistent results. This paper focuses on understanding the efficacy of these techniques, their drawbacks, and potential next steps for the field.
