The possibility of formation of connective-tissue vascular prostheses on subcutaneously implanted polychlorovynil base was demonstrated in experiments on rats. Suppression of the function of phagocytic cell with carrageenan decelerates, while its stimulation with tamerit accelerates the formation of connective-tissue autoprostheses.

The maintenance of an appropriate ratio of body fat to muscle mass is essential for the preservation of health and performance, as excessive body fat is associated with an increased risk of various diseases. Accurate body composition assessment requires precise segmentation of structures. In this study we developed a novel automatic machine learning approach for volumetric segmentation and quantitative assessment of MRI volumes and investigated the efficacy of using a machine learning algorithm to assess muscle, subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), and bone volume of the thigh before and after a strength training.

WBSCR16 is essential for mitochondrial 16S rRNA processing in mammals.

Mitochondrial rRNAs play important roles in regulating mtDNA-encoded gene expression and energy metabolism subsequently. However, the proteins that regulate mitochondrial 16S rRNA processing remain poorly understood. Herein, we generated adipose-specific Wbscr16-/-mice and cells, both of which exhibited dramatic mitochondrial changes.

Background: The complement system is locally activated after joint injuries and leads to the deposition of the terminal complement complex (TCC). Sublytic TCC deposition is associated with phenotypical alterations of human articular chondrocytes (hAC) and enhanced release of inflammatory cytokines. Chronic inflammation is a known driver of chondrosenescence in osteoarthritis (OA).

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the redox balance in subcutaneous and retroperitoneal fat pads of male and female Wistar rats.

Materials And Methods: The study analyzed the activity and gene expression of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase, along with the production of NADPH oxidases dependent on HO and gene expression of NOX1, NOX2, and NOX4.

Results: The retroperitoneal fat pad in males compared with females had greater NOX2 and NOX4 expression, along with higher superoxide dismutase activity.

Intervertebral disc regeneration - Is it possible?

Acta Orthop Traumatol Turc

December 2024

Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Brugmann University Hospital Center, Free University of Brussels, Brussels, Belgium.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate disc metabolism after decreasing the axial load through surgery by assessing the glycosaminoglycan content through a non-invasive method-delayed gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of cartilage (dGEMRIC).

Methods: Sixteen patients with mono-segmental disc degeneration (L4-L5 or L5-S1) who underwent posterior lumbar spine fixation with intervertebral distraction of 2 consecutive vertebrae using monoaxial transpedicular screws and lyophilized allograft to achieve segmental fusion, and who had a follow-up period of at least 2 years, were included in this study. The first lumbar disc was used as the control group.
