A unique trinuclear cluster containing two short Pt-->Ag dative bonds was prepared and characterized crystallographically. Two monocationic orthometalated Pt(II) complexes containing 2-phenylpyridine and the tridentate ligand 9S3 (1,4,7-trithiacyclononane) exhibit axial sulfur interactions with Pt as well as short dative bonds. The Pt-->Ag dative bonding results in a dramatic shortening of the axial Pt-S distance in each Pt complex cation, relative to the mononuclear Pt complex. Evidence for Pt-Ag interactions in solution is also presented.

A series of cyclometalated (N^C^N) Pt(II)-platinum complexes featuring a terpyridine ligand with a non-coordinating nitrogen atom and a Pt-C bond was synthesized. In the presence of Ag, the bis(isonitrile)Pt(II) complex formed a remarkable self-assembled helicoidal dimer stabilized by coordination of Ag(I) and metallophilic Pt-Ag interactions. Its assembly was observed in the solid state and maintained in solution.

The reactions of cycloplatinated guanidinate(1-) complexes - with AgTFA (TFA = OC(O)CF) in 1:1 and 1:2 Pt/Ag molar ratios afforded complexes containing three types of PtAg skeletons (-, , and ), one 1D CP containing PtAg skeleton (), and a PtAg complex () in 91-95% (method 1), 73-82% (method 2) (-), and 54-79% (, , , and ) yields. The reactions of with 2,6-XylNC (2,6-Xyl = 2,6-MeCH) and 4-DMAP (4-dimethylaminopyridine) gave a neutral complex and an ionic complex , respectively. Molecular structures of 12 complexes were unambiguously determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

The synthesis and photophysical properties of the heteropolynuclear Pt-Ag complex having cyclometalated rollover bipyridine ligands (bpy*) and bridging pyrazolato ligands are reported. The PtAg complex was synthesized by two step reactions from a Pt(II) complex precursor having the rollover bpy* ligand, [Pt(bpy*)(dmso)Cl], with 3,5-dimethylpyrazole (MepzH) and a subsequent replacement of NH protons in the MepzH moieties with the Ag(I) ion. The PtAg complex exists as a mixture of U- and Z-shaped isomers in solution, whose structures were clearly determined by single-crystal X-ray structural analyses.

New bis-pyrazole complexes [Pt(C^C*)(RpzH) ]X, containing a cyclometalated N-heterocyclic carbene ligand (HC^C*=1-(4-(ethoxycarbonyl)phenyl)-3-methyl-1H-imidazol-2-ylidene) were prepared as chloride (X=Cl , RpzH: 3,5-Me pzH 1 a, 4-MepzH 2 a, pzH 3 a), perchlorate (X=ClO , 1 b-3 b), or hexafluorophosphate (X=PF , RpzH: 3,5-Me pzH 1 c) salts. The X-ray structure of 1 a showed that the Cl anion is trapped by the cation through two N-H⋅⋅⋅Cl bonds. In solution of methanol, acetone and THF at RT, 1 a-3 a coexist in equilibrium with the corresponding [PtCl(C^C*)(RpzH)] (B) and RpzH species.

By combining different oxidation states, coordination indices and bridging systems, it has been possible to obtain the structurally novel M(OH) cluster core (M = transition metal) found in the organometallic compound (NBu)[PtPt(CCl)(μ-OH)(μ-OH)] (1). The cluster is formed by two (μ-OH) and two (μ-OH) units that bond platinum atoms in different oxidation states. The cluster core geometry can best be described as a half-hexagram.
